Twenty-five years later, Walter's signature song is a staple on the radio, and can also be heard in feature films and on television. Meanwhile, he has continued to make original music as both a prolific individual artist, with a total of eight solo CDs to his credit, and as a member of performing and recording bands including the Malibooz and the Brooklyn Cowboys.

Today, Walter Egan continues to write, produce, and record new music (check out his two new songs in the MP3 downloads section below) and perform live around Nashville and nationally.

It was a blast being a part of this video, so many great memories. I was a small "background" person but just getting to participate and being up all night filming was really a lot of fun. I remember the theater door getting broken during the filming and Rick Springfield came by with his dog. Hard to believe that this was 40 years ago. Oh how my life has changed since then; but I will always love this piece of it.

I first heard it on my grandmother's radio, on the last week of May in 1983., on Saturday May 28th., 1983., again on Sunday on May 29th., 1983! And I never heard that music no more after that!

This was a great memory pleaser. I remember seeing this video and song when I was in middle school on a show called MV3. Looked for it for years but had the title wrong, I thought it was FULL moon fire. This is great.

Great memory of when MTV played music. Was glad to be alive in early 1983, or at least a kid. This rocks compared to magnet and steal. Believe it or not Fools Game, by Michael Bolton was on MTV at that time when he rocked as much as Sammy Hagar.

On this day in 1983 {June 11th} Walter Egan performed "Fool Moon Fire" on the ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time "Fool Moon Fire" was at position #97 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, and it was also in it's tenth and final week on the chart, three weeks earlier it had peaked at #46 {for 1 week}...
Between 1977 and 1983 the Queens, New York native had four records on the Top 100 chart, one made the Top 10, "Magnet and Steel", it peaked at #8 in August of 1978...
Besides "Magnet and Steel", his three other Top 100 records were "Only The Lucky" {#82 in 1977}, "Hot Summer Nights" {#55 in 1978}, and the above "Fool Moon Fire"...
Walter Egan will celebrate his 72nd birthday next month on July 12th, 2020...

This song really caught me at the time. I have Egan's earlier, Fleetwood-like albums -- they are super -- but I think the more alternative sound on this album should have made him a huge star. I guess there was a label dispute. My tape of "Wild Exhibitions" finally fell apart last year. I don't have a record player and this isn't on CD. Walter, come back to Long Island and I'll book you a "welcome back" concert.

Egan is very under rated. He is one of the California Rock and Roll faithful. About the time this song came out, he appeared on a summer program on MTV, he and his partner were working to preserve the Surf Sound. It was obvious the VJ did NOT know who Egan was.

Thriller hit the top 10 in March 1984, but of course the album came out in Fall 1982. This album came out a few months later. I don't know when exactly either video came out. Walter Egan also appeared on the short-lived Art James-hosted US version of the popular UK game show Catch Phrase in 1985.

Five years after this video, I saw him on a this game show with Chuck Woolery called "Scrabble." When he was given the bio intro, Chuck says: "you say you are a musician who is well-known; what kind of songs and music have you done." Walter responds "Magnet and Steel" and hums the tune. Chuck says he never heard of it with that tone, coming across as arrogant but naive. Walter maintained good composure but thought Chuck was lying and trying to put him down.

Scrabble had LA-area DJ Charlie Tuna as its announcer from late 1985-1990 and in 1993. IIRC Charlie Tuna recognized the title Magnet and Steel during his appearance. Andrew Gold appeared with his family on Family Feud in 1990 in 1991, and Ray Combs didn't know he'd recorded Lonely Boy or Thank you for Being a Friend(the Golden Girls was still in first-run using the cover of the song as the theme)

The US version of Catch Phrase has never aired anywhere since its original airing. A website with an interview with Egan had Egan stating he won four games. The 80s run of Scrabble did air on USA Network from 1991-95.

You realize this video has the same basic concept as Micheal "King of Pop" Jackson's famous Thriller video, yet it's a bit older? Looks to me like Mister Pop King stole the idea and just did it with a bigger budget than this guy.

Also, Jackson ( who I personally never cared much for by the way ) was already a big celebrity and had allot more money to put into making and promoting HIS video, . .. where's THIS obviously had a much more modest budget and received very little exposure.
