Originally called Hu… Read Full Bio ↴Wang Chung is a British new wave musical group.
Originally called Huang Chung which is Chinese for "perfect pitch" (though they later claimed it was the sound a guitar made on American Bandstand), the band formed in 1979. The lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Jack Hues, bassist Nick Feldman, saxophonist David Burnand a.k.a "Hogg" and drummer Darren Costin. Their self-titled debut was released by Arista Records in 1982 after several singles, including the minor post-punk hit "Isn't It About Time We Were On TV". In 1983, after being dropped by Arista and signed to Geffen Records, they changed their name to Wang Chung (at Geffen's suggestion, to make pronunciation easier for English-speakers) and subsequently they released Points on the Curve, which yielded two major hits, "Don't Let Go" and "Dance Hall Days"
In 1986, Costin left the band and Hues and Feldman continued to record. The same year, they had their biggest hits: "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and "Let's Go", both from the album Mosaic. Not long after releasing their final album The Warmer Side of Cool in 1989, Wang Chung disbanded in 1991.
In June 2005, Hues and Feldman reunited as Wang Chung on the reality TV series Hit Me Baby One More Time, performing "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and a cover of "Hot in Herre" by Nelly.
Shortly after, in postings at WangChung.com as well as the band's MySpace site, there was news of a new Wang Chung album being worked on by Hues and Feldman. In an e-mail response from Hues, he said, "We are shooting for a release around the March 2006 time frame and a tour in May. We are not sure who we are touring with yet, maybe Heaven 17 or Devo". Also on the band's MySpace, you can hear new clips such as "Hot In Herre" (The Nelly Cover) and a new song "I Was Abducted by the 80's".

What came over you is coming over me
I've had enough of all the old stuff
I saw the writing on the wall on my TV
It's another second coming, like it or not, yeah, oh yeah
It's another second coming, like it or not
You better start praying to a new God
Start praying, praying to a new God
Start praying to a new, new God
They're saying the Devil's got a new job
Start praying to a new
A lot of Babel came down the cable
Everybody can be famous for a day
From shore to shore, a big department store
Is all that's left of the American way
It's another second coming, like it or not, yeah, oh yeah
Well, it's another second coming, like it or not
You better start praying to a new God
Start praying, praying to a new God
Start praying to a new, new God
Start praying, what are you afraid of
Start praying to a new
There's a big world
In the street outside
In their uniform of pride
And they've all come
To see a star from the east
Is he man or beast? Decide
Feel like I'm crucified, still I'm not satisfied
The second coming is coming anyway
I see them pray for more on every dance floor
I hear the word go out across the milky way
It's another second coming, like it or not, yeah, oh yeah
It's another second coming, like it or not
You better start praying to a new God
Start praying, praying to a new God
Start praying to a new, new God
Success and money's what he's made of
Start praying to a new God
Start praying, praying on the airwaves
Start praying to a new, new God
Start praying, praying on the freeway
Start praying to a new God
Start praying, praying at the back door
Start praying to a new, new God
Start praying, praying on the dance floor
Start praying to a new God
Start praying, praying to a new God
Start swaying to a new, new God
Start praying, praying to a new God
Start swaying to a new God
Start praying, praying to a new God
Start praying
The lyrics of Wang Chung's song Praying to a New God are a commentary on the societal and cultural changes that were occurring in the 1980s. The song describes the pervasive influence of technology and the media, as well as the shift in values from traditional ideals to materialism and consumerism. The opening lines "What got into you got into me too, What came over you is coming over me" indicates how the trend is spreading all over and everyone is getting affected by it.
The reference to "writing on the wall on my TV" suggests that these changes are so vast and all-encompassing that they cannot be ignored. The song also presents a warning that the old ways are gone and a new world order is beginning, stated in the lyrics "It's another second coming, like it or not. You better start praying to a new God". The chorus, "start praying to a new, new God", implies that people need to adapt to these changes by finding new beliefs and ideals to guide them through this new world, as the old ones no longer suffice.
In essence, the song is a call to action, that in order to move forward, people must accept the changes and adapt to a new society that places importance on consumerism, fame and success, rather than traditional values. The song highlights the themes of change, adaptation, and the necessity of embracing new beliefs and ideals in order to survive in a new world.
