The Way We Feel

About sex and violence
And I've heard them all
In this naked city if it sells a million
Then it must be true
It's time for celebration
Got to make a demonstration of our rights
We want some better stories
No boring glories No more easy lies
Transmission is my ambition
Like a real magician Not a politician
Transmission ambition magician conspiracy
Conspiracy for unity
If we started at opposite ends of the dial
And slowly turned
Would we meet in the middle of a story
That burned the book of love?
The rebels joined the system
They revel in the twisted song of pain
The pain that has no name
We've got some better stories
No boring glories No easy lies
They have ways to make us watch
They have ways to make us talk
They have ways to make us disappear
We have ways to look away
We have ways to disobey
We have ways to make them hear the music
There are 8 million stories
About sex and freedom
And I want them all
In this naked country if we sell a million
Then we will be true
We have ways to celebrate
We have ways to agitate
We have ways to make them hear the music
The song “The Way We Feel” by War is a protest song about how the media and entertainment industry exploit sex, violence, and pain to sell their stories to the public. The lyrics suggest that such social messages have an insidious impact on viewers and listeners, resulting in a skewed worldview that undermines the human spirit. The lead singer, Charles Miller, opens the song by stating that there are 8 million stories about sex and violence, which he has heard them all. He asserts that in the naked city, anything that sells a million copies must be true.
He then proceeds to express his frustration over the lack of genuine stories, calling for some better tales that avoid the usual clichés and lies. He believes that transmission is his ambition, and like a true magician, he wants to conjure up stories that challenge politicians and authority figures. The chorus repeats the phrase “conspiracy for unity” and highlights the importance of fighting together as a society towards a common goal. In the second verse, the singer proposes a metaphorical idea of tuning the dial of life to the opposite end to find a story that burns the book of love.
In contrast to the first verse, the second verse invokes the image of rebels who have joined the system and revel in the twisted song of pain. He insists that we must generate better stories and avoid the easy lies that they fed us. He recognizes that they have ways to make us watch, to make us talk, and to make us disappear, but we have ways to look away, disobey, and make them hear the music. In conclusion, the song urges the public to agitate, celebrate and come together in a spirit of unity to demand better stories that reflect the diverse experiences of humankind.
