War Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pressure-splitting seams.
Imminent danger in the headlines.
Glamour on the T.V.
Chasing fools gold.
Growing cold.
Drowning in anxiety.
Pushing symbols and clever phrasing.
False notions of ritual,
Credentials,
Comfort,
Safety.
Relentless and crowding.
It's hard to breathe.
They'll give you the disease,
Then they'll sell you the cure to set you free.
The lyrics to War's song War are highly political and provide commentary on the state of the world and the dangers facing society. The opening line "Between the world and me" suggests a divide between the singer and the rest of the world. The pressure-splitting seams symbolize the tension and instability of society, while the imminent danger in the headlines refers to the constant threats and crises reported in the media. The glamour on the T.V. suggests that people are drawn in by the lure of fame and celebrity, distracting them from the real issues at hand.
The lines "Chasing fools gold" and "Growing cold" speak to the pursuit of material wealth and the emotional numbness that can result from it. The reference to drowning in anxiety highlights the mental and emotional toll that the pressures of modern society can have on individuals. The lack of reason line suggests that people are operating without logic or critical thinking skills, instead relying on symbols and clever phrasing to guide them. The false notions of ritual and credentials speak to the ways in which people can be misled by institutionalized practices and the idea of authority.
The final lines "They'll give you the disease, then they'll sell you the cure to set you free" are perhaps the most biting of the lyrics. They suggest that those in power have created or enabled the problems facing society, only to then profit from providing the solution. This hints at a sense of conspiracy and mistrust in the systems that govern our society.
