New Theory
Washed Out Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your choice was right
No chance to be there now
I swear I'm done
You'll want to leave your path
It's yours to find
It's all you've ever done
You're falling down
You'll falling down to us
Da da da da da

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "New Theory" by Washed Out deal with themes of decision-making, self-discovery, and taking responsibility for one's own life. The singer addresses someone who has made a choice that is right for them, but which has led them away from the singer's path. The singer acknowledges that they are done with trying to reconcile their own path with the other person's, and that the other person must find their own way. The final line of the chorus, "you're falling down to us," suggests that the singer still cares for the other person and will be there to catch them if they stumble.

Overall, the lyrics are quite abstract and open to interpretation, which is characteristic of Washed Out's dreamy and atmospheric style. The use of repetition in the chorus ("da da da da da") emphasizes the musicality of the song and creates a hypnotic effect. The lyrics' ambiguity allows the listener to project their own experiences and emotions onto them, making "New Theory" a deeply personal and resonant song for many.

I remember when I first listened to this song.
I was 16, the summer day just before one of my highschool exams which was super important as I was trying to get into med school in my country.
I remember being very nervous but also feeling good times were to come after discovering this.
After 2 years of failed attempts into getting med school, going through depression and panic disorder, death of loved ones, finally graduating med school abroad, loving relationships and heartbreaks I am now feeling nervous as tomorrow is my first Emergency Room shift of my life, back in my country.
And I had to come back to this song; it makes me feel high with calmness and summer vibes and sure that better times are to come. I am nervous but I feel happy.
Did everything go according to plan as I was expecting when I was 16? No, but I have enough. And enough is good.
Love you all.

Love this song. It had to grow on me. I'm a 46 year old Gen-X'r who grew up to country and pop so when I heard this it was so alien and foreign. Now I revisit this song often.
