Watson & Nash have worked together in both a writing and performing capacity for almost a decade. The two met around 2001 while Shay was speaking on songwriting at a workshop in Nashville, TN. At the time, Joe was writing, performing and producing while living in West Virgina. The two struck up a friendship and with Shay's encouragement, Joe soon made a move to Nashville. At that time, Shay was touring with his own band Ten Mile Drive. Joe began working on a solo career and kept ties to Shay, working with him on occasional projects. A few years passed, Shay's band had come to an end and after a brief solo run, he and Joe, who had continued to work on his songwriting and artistry, began discussing the idea of putting together a duo. The duo idea morphed into a band in 2007 with several other talented players and artists. After a brief run the group disbanded. Shay and Joe, however, continued to work and perform together and refine the original idea of forming a duo.

Bring It On
Watson & Nash Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With the lorries rolling by
Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky
Cold wind ripping down the alley at dawn
And the morning paper flies
Dead man lying by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes
Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around
Blind man running through the light of the night
With an answer in his hand
Come on down to the river of sight
And you can really understand
Red lights flashing through
The window in the rain
Can you hear the sirens moan
White cane lying in a gutter in the lane
If you're walking home alone
The lyrics to Watson and Nash's song "Bring It On" paints a vivid picture of a city in chaos. The song opens up with an old man sitting by the side of the road with lorries (trucks) passing by, indicating that the city is always on the go. The old man could be a metaphor for someone who has been there for a long time and seen it all. The artist then describes how heavy the load of the city is by mentioning a blue moon sinking, which could signify depression or isolation. As the morning paper flies, it brings attention to the fact that things change fast and that it is easy to get left behind.
The next verse mentions a blind man running through the light of the night with an answer in his hand. This could be an allusion to someone who is searching for something and needs to find it quickly. The artist mentions a "river of sight" which could signify a point of clarity in the midst of confusion. The red lights flashing through the window and the sirens moaning highlight the fact that things are going wrong all around. The song ends with a white cane in a gutter you can't help but take as a metaphor for those who have lost their way in the city.
The overall message of the song is to keep moving forward and not let the chaos and destruction of the city bring you down. The chorus emphasizes this point with the line, "Don't let it bring you down, it's only castles burning. Find someone who's turning, and you will come around."
