Do You Hear What I Hear?
Wayne King and His Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
But they wouldn't hurt you, not much
Since everyone spread the story
With his own little personal touch
Do nothin' till you hear from me
Pay no attention to what's said
Why people tear the seam of anyone's dream
Do nothin' till you hear from me
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you've heard
I haven't a chance
True I've been seen with someone new
But does that mean that I'm untrue
When we're apart the words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you
Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill
But please do nothin' till you hear it from me
And you never will
Do nothin' till you hear from me
Do nothin' till you hear from me
Pay no attention to what's said
Why people tear the seam of anyone's dream
Is over my head
Do nothin' till you hear from me
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you've heard
I haven't a chance
True I've been seen with someone new
But does that mean that I'm untrue
When we're apart the words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you
Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill
But please do nothin' till you hear it from me
And you never will
The lyrics of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" by Wayne King and His Orchestra explore themes of gossip, the power of communication, and the complexity of relationships. The opening lines suggest a chain of communication in which information is passed on from person to person, with each individual adding their own personal spin to the story. This reflects the nature of gossip and how information can be distorted as it spreads.
The lyrics emphasize the importance of not taking action or making judgments until one has heard directly from the source. The singer urges the listener to ignore hearsay and rumors, highlighting the potential harm that can come from believing secondhand information. This resonates with the idea that people often jump to conclusions without having all the facts, leading to misunderstandings and unnecessary conflict.
The lyrics also touch on the vulnerability of relationships and the impact of outside influences on a couple's bond. The singer acknowledges that they have been seen with someone new, but questions whether this should automatically make them appear unfaithful. They express their true feelings for their partner and emphasize the depth of their love, despite any external distractions or temptations that may arise.
Overall, the song conveys a message of trust, honesty, and patience in relationships. The plea to "do nothing till you hear from me" serves as a reminder to value direct communication and to not let outside voices dictate the course of a relationship. It encourages listeners to have faith in the love and connection they share with their partner, and to not allow gossip or speculation to come between them.

Heard this a couple days ago on SiriusXM's Holiday Traditions channel and just loved it. Percy Faith's cover of DYHWIH is still my favorite instrumental version, but this probably takes second place. It's full of delightful little orchestral curlicues -- and how cool is it that the arranger was the guy who composed the memorable themes for Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers!
