While leading worship at a Christian youth camp, the father of one of the children videotaped Watson's performance and sent it to a Nashville industry rep. His debut LP, Workin' in the Final Hour, followed in 1980. A series of albums like 1982's New Lives for Old, 1984's Man in the Middle and 1985's Giants in the Land followed before his breakthrough record, the Grammy-nominated Watercolor Ponies, appeared in 1987.
Watson also notched well over a dozen Dove Award nominations, and launched a number of CCM chart-toppers including "The Class of '95," "Be in Her Eyes," "A Beautiful Place." "Walk in the Dark," "More of You," "It's Time," "Home Free" and "Almighty."
In 1995 he signed to Warner/Alliance to issue Field of Souls; The Way Home followed three years later. Appropriately, his song "For Such a Time as This" was used as the theme for the 1999 season premiere of CBS's popular series Touched by an Angel, reflecting Watson's own growing popularity in the secular music arena. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
Hard Times
Wayne Watson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You've fallen on some hard times?
That your dreams are crushed
And scattered to the wind
And if there's a someday
When the pain will be forgotten
Right now, it's too much
For your heart to comprehend
You say you wish that you
Could get back to the good times
Back when life and love
And plans fell into place
Before the floods came
Before the dam started breaking
Back when the waves kept their distance
From your faith
But in the hard times
When your world has gone to pieces
You pick up the one piece
That matters most
'Cause in hard times
You learn to hold on to Jesus
Oh, there's no other place
To know the strength of your faith
But in the hard times
Now in the busy times
You hold on to the calendar
Then in the easy times
You pick up on your sleep
And in the half times
You learn to stop, look and listen
Then in the clutch you learn
To stand and take the heat, yeah
Oh, but in the hard times
When your world has gone to pieces
You pick up the one piece
That matters most
'Cause in hard times
You learn to hold on to Jesus
Oh, there's no other place
To know the strength of your faith
But in the hard times
When your world as gone to pieces
You pick up the one piece
That matters most
'Cause in hard times
You learn to hold on to Jesus
Oh, there's no other place
To know the strength of your faith
But in the hard times
Oh, but in the hard times, mmm...
Wayne Watson's song "Hard Times" is a comforting reminder that everyone can go through tough times and that, in these moments, faith can be the anchor that helps to overcome them. The opening verse sets up the scene of a conversation between two individuals, one of whom has fallen on hard times. The lyrics evoke emotions of despair and hopelessness, as the person describes how their dreams are crushed and scattered to the wind. They struggle to find meaning in their pain, wondering if there will ever be a someday when they can forget it.
However, the chorus comes as a reassuring message that there is still hope, and the one thing that can provide the strength to carry on is a belief in Jesus. In the hard times, when everything seems to have gone wrong, the singer urges listeners to hold onto Jesus, knowing that there is no other way to know the strength of one's faith. The song offers a message of support and encouragement that will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled with difficult circumstances in life.
Overall, "Hard Times" speaks to the power of faith in helping people get through difficult times. The song encourages people to turn to God for strength and reassurance during challenging periods in life. It is a reminder that no matter what happens, there is always hope if one holds onto their belief in Jesus.
