We Are Standard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All they want is pretty houses
and pretty dreams,
dreaming of sunlit churches and
the gold within.

They say: "Oh sweet baby, come over here
and hold me tight,
I know you are the one for me, you are,
my mister, almost right".

But you, my princess,
your dreams were on a different hue,
you my ex-love,
but then we didn t have a clue.

You said let s just be friends,
and let s be lovers too.
You said let s just be friends,
so let s be lovers too,
let s be lovers too.

We began like Fred and Ginger,
dancing on air,
so easy, no money,
and we didn t care.

You said: "Oh sweet baby, come over here
and hold me tight.
Why don t we live for today?
Why don t we live for tonight?".

But you, my princess,
your dreams were on a different hue,
you my ex-love,
but then we didn t have a clue.

You said let s just be friends,
and let s be lovers too.
You said let s just be friends,
so let s be lovers too,
let s be lovers too,
let s be lovers too.

She said: "Let s be lovers too".
She said: "Let s be lovers too".
She said: "Let s be lovers too".
She said: "Let s be lovers".

She said: "I just wanna be your friend".
She said: "I just wanna be your friend".
She said: "I just wanna be your friend".
She said: "I just wanna be your friend".

I wanna be your friend.
I wanna be your friend.

I wanna be your friend.
I wanna be your friend ...

Overall Meaning

In "Easy" by We Are Standard, the lyrics tell a story about two people who began their relationship easily without any financial concerns. The first verse talks about how society has a tendency to pursue pretty material things and aims to have a comfortable life. The girl however, has different aspirations, and despite still being in a relationship with the guy, has already split from his dreams by living life on her own terms. The guy however is still in love with her and calls her 'sweet baby'. The second verse talks about how they started their relationship and the guy's belief that they can live for the moment and have a happy time together. However, they remain different people with different dreams, and despite trying to remain friends, end up becoming lovers again.

The lyrics are mainly about the boy and girl's relationship and how it has changed over time. Although both agreed to be just friends, they can't help but fall back in love with each other. The lyrics portray how complex relationships can be, how they are not always clear-cut and how even though they know they shouldn't be together, they can't seem to let go. The repetition of "let's be friends" emphasizes how hard it can be to let go of someone and just be friends, especially when shared memories and emotions get intertwined.
