Let's Get Together
We Five Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is but a song we sing
Fears the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the dove is on the wing
And you need not know why

Come on people let's smile on your brother hey
Let's get together and love one another now
Come on people let's love one another right now

Some will come and some will go
And we must surely pass
When the one who left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
Fading on the grass

Come on people let's smile on your brother hey
Let's get together and love one another now
Come on people and love one another hey
Let's get together and love one another now
Come on people let's love one another right now

If you hear the song I sing
Then you must understand
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
One key unlocks them both you know
And it's at your command

Come on people let's smile on your brother hey
Let's get together and love one another now
Come on people let's love one another hey
Let's get together and love one another now
Come on people let's love one another hey
Let's get together and love another now

Come on people let's love one another hey
Let's get together and love one another now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to We Five's song Let's Get Together urge people to unite in love and compassion with one another. The opening line, "Love is but a song we sing," suggests that love is a universal language that can bring people together. However, the second line, "Fears the way we die," acknowledges the darker side of human nature, as fear and death have the power to separate us. Despite this, the song remains hopeful, suggesting that we have the power to make a difference in the world. "You can make the mountains ring or make the angels cry" suggests that individuals have the power to create change, whether big or small. The dove on the wing is also symbolic of hope and encourages people to act without necessarily knowing why.

The chorus of the song repeatedly urges people to come together in the spirit of unity and love, and emphasizes the idea that we are all interconnected. The lines, "We are but a moment’s sunlight fading on the grass" convey the fleeting nature of life, and remind people to seize the moment and make the most of it by loving and supporting each other. Finally, the closing lines offer a message of hope and empowerment, as they suggest that individuals have the ability to conquer both love and fear, and hold the key to their own destinies.

Bev is 19 years old here, what a powerful voice.

Posting appreciated. This did get close to the top 30. They, also, had a regional hit with their version of "Beyond The Sea." Talented Michael Stewart arranged all their songs which is why the harmonies are so perfect. RIP Michael. PEACE TO ALL.

First time hearing the band, except for their big hit. Am very impressed. Magnificent voice she had. Roy b, Cape Town, South Africa.

What a great vocal. Bev was really something.

This version. Pure 60's. Pure folk rock. Sadly, so much of it is lost.

Dave Piccolo

Thanks for posting. I don't think I've seen this one before. Bev was the best.

In fucking credible. This band was so much more influential than most realize on the late 60s scene we all know and love

Driving across Nevada in a 62 VW with ny college best gal, listening to some station, somewhere, playing a set of We Five. The desert, the girl and the music, what a day!

Hard to believe this great version of the song was performed in 1965 on a Nationally televised program like Shindig (and went nowhere) yet the same song made a big hit for The Youngbloods four years later in 1969.

Tell me about it! I was a teen. Tape recording all the songs I loved off the radio on my Webcor tape recorder in 1965. The We Fives “ Let’s Get Together” was on the end of my tape reel, being a song played in December 1965, an important time in my life, so I remember it well. It was not given much air play and my taped recording did not pick up who the artist was. Then a few years later when The Youngbloods came out with their slowed down, boring version of this song that I loved so much, it really pizzzzzed me off! It took me a long time to locate The We Fives version again. Thank God for YouTube!
