Any Friend of Diane's
Weezer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
(Home is where the heart is)

Any friend of Diane's (Any friend of Diane's)
Is a friend of mine

Workin' at Papa John's, I was making good bread
Got a twenty dollar tip on New Years
And I moved out to L.A.

She drew me up a map with a fountain pen
She took me to her mom's house with the boys from down the way

Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
(Home is where the heart is)

Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine

Head bang in the crowd, dive from the stage
With black hair and a Smiths shirt
Meat is murder

I asked her if she had a boyfriend, she said no
I asked her if she had a girlfriend, she said hell I wouldn't know

Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
(Home is where the heart is)

Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine

Went down to the bank of the river
And she washed my dirty hands
I'd been hanging around in a cloud of shame
'Til she let me taste the cold water

Diane would help me pass out all the flyers
I became a big shot, and she got sick one day
I still have the map she drew for me
I'd be lost without it
There's so much I wanna say

Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine
(Home is where the heart is)

Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Weezer's song "Any Friend of Diane's" tell the story of a close friendship between the singer and a woman named Diane. The repetitive refrain, "Any friend of Diane's is a friend of mine," emphasizes the loyalty and strong bond between the two. The phrase "Home is where the heart is" suggests that their connection is like a home, a place of comfort and belonging.

The song begins with the singer working at Papa John's, where they receive a generous tip on New Year's Eve. This windfall enables them to move to Los Angeles, where Diane becomes their guide. She draws them a map with a fountain pen and introduces them to her friends.

The second verse portrays a more rebellious side of their friendship. They headbang in the crowd and dive from the stage, showing their shared love for rock music. The mention of a Smiths shirt and the line "Meat is murder" hint at their alternative and anti-establishment attitudes. The singer wonders about Diane's romantic preferences, asking if she has a boyfriend or a girlfriend, suggesting an open-mindedness in their relationship.

The third verse takes a more emotional turn as they find solace by the river. Diane washes the singer's dirty hands, a symbolic act of cleansing and forgiveness. The singer has been carrying around a sense of shame, but Diane gives them hope and helps them find redemption. She helps them distribute flyers, contributing to their success and becoming an integral part of their journey.

The song concludes with a sense of gratitude and admiration for Diane. The singer still cherishes the map she drew for them because without it, they would be lost. There's a feeling of unspoken words and unfinished business between them, suggesting that their friendship has had a profound impact on the singer's life.

Overall, "Any Friend of Diane's" is a tribute to a special friendship, emphasizing the trust, loyalty, and support that exists between the singer and Diane.

That guitar solo is actually insane

@jsnipn

Stop thinking about the band for a minute and think about whether you like the songs or not. Bands aren't locked in to one sound.

I like it it's chill and it sounds like they had fun with it.

@JohnKayJr

I get annoyed that people can't get over how they used to sound. The new stuff is really good - and it's not the same, and that's a good thing!

@Joela393

Any time a rock band tries a different sound, it's always pop. You're only listening to this because it was made by weezer, if it was made by a pop artist, you wouldn't care

@_catsy

Much easier to listen to if I assume it isn't Weezer, but Weeze. Perfectly good pop music, but that doesn't resonate with me at all. I feel exactly the same way about this album as I do Hurley. It's just a completely different band that doesn't have my heart.
