I'm Just Being Honest
Weezer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Walk into the venue
You slipped me your CD
Asked me if I'd listen
Give you my critique
I listened to it
But halfway through it, I had to quit
Your band sounds like shit
So, here we go
Don't get mad at me, I'm just being honest
I should've lied
Don't get mad at me, I'm just being honest

Walk into the bedroom
You were standing there
Turned around and smiled at me and said
"You just cut your hair"
But then I told you
I thought you looked better before
You said, "Hope you like sleeping on the floor"

So, here we go
Don't get mad at me, I'm just being honest
I should've lied
But now you're mad at me, I'm just being honest
How 'bout from now on, you'll write the script, I'll read the lines
So, here we go
Don't get mad at me, I'm just being honest

And now I'm staring at her napkin
With seven digits that I can't make out
She wrote it down in purple lipstick
I should've never, I should've never opened up
And baby, it's because I'm Irish
I just couldn't keep my big mouth shut
Is that an eight? Is that a zero?
I should've never, I should've never opened up

So, here we go
Don't get mad at me, I'm just being honest
I should've lied
But now you're mad at me, I'm just being honest
How 'bout from now on, you'll write the script, I'll read the lines
So, here we go
Don't get mad at me, I'm just being honest (I'm just being honest)

Whoa-oh-oh
(I'm just being honest)

Whoa-oh-oh
(I'm just being honest)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Weezer's song "I'm Just Being Honest" depict a series of situations in which the singer, without sugarcoating or hiding his true feelings, chooses to express his honest opinions to others, even if it may lead to uncomfortable or confrontational outcomes. The singer recounts a scenario where someone hands him their CD at a venue, asking for his feedback on their music. Despite attempting to listen, he finds it unbearable and bluntly tells them, "Your band sounds like shit." This honesty, though harsh, is presented as a reflection of the singer's authenticity and unwillingness to deceive others for the sake of politeness.

In the second verse, the narrative shifts to a personal interaction in the bedroom, where the singer's partner reveals a haircut. Instead of offering insincere praise, the singer admits he preferred their appearance before the change, leading to a heated exchange that culminates in the partner suggesting he can now sleep on the floor if he dislikes her haircut. This uncompromising honesty in personal relationships showcases the singer's commitment to transparency, even when it may lead to tension or conflict.

The chorus serves as a recurring refrain throughout the song, with the singer reiterating his stance of being unapologetically honest, urging others not to take offense at his candid remarks. Despite acknowledging that lying might have been a smoother course of action, the singer asserts his commitment to honesty, even if it may result in disagreements or hurt feelings. The chorus's repetition underscores the central theme of authenticity and the importance the singer places on speaking his truth, unfiltered by social niceties.

The final verse introduces a scenario where the singer receives a phone number from someone written in purple lipstick on a napkin. Faced with uncertainty about deciphering the digits, the singer attributes his inability to keep his thoughts to himself to his Irish background. The regret and self-reflection in this verse highlight the consequences of unfiltered honesty, suggesting that while openness can lead to clarity, it can also complicate situations and potentially strain relationships. Despite the challenges honesty may bring, the singer maintains his stance, once again affirming, "I'm just being honest," as a resolute declaration of his commitment to transparency, even in the face of uncertainty and misunderstanding.

I don't judge a Weezer song until about the 10th time listening to it.

I love Weezer!! Always have and always will. I like the fact that they always change their style. Some bands have a signature style and no matter what, you always know it's them. Weezer isn't and has never been like that. It's what attracted me to them and always will.

Ty Young

Originally I was a little dissapointed, because I WANTED that dark grungy album I expected, but I still can't get the bops from the Black Album like this out of my head.

Me either! This is so true! Life long fan and they grow and it always grows on me!

That’s me for a lot of songs because I don’t wanna judge somebody’s hard work on the first listen

Bango McCrash

I judged this song on the first listen. 80's new wave with jangly guitars and a strong, solid beat. It's Weezer, but with definite New Wave influence, jangly guitars, and genuine crunch. I judged this track one of my favorite Weezer tracks on first listen, and I still feel that way.

Wow, a band that sounds different every album and never gets boring by sticking to the same riffy stuff their whole 25 year career! I've seen soo many of those!
