Growing up in the fields of experimental and post-industrial music with several projects since the early 1990s, Axel Frank began to adapt a more melodic approach. Under the name Werkraum (German for "work room"), Frank released material on CDRs and multiple compilations in the late '90s and early 2000s, until debuting in 2004 with the full-length "Unsere Feuer brennen!", released on Cold Spring Records.
Werkraum's second album, titled "KristalleIn", followed in 2005, focusing more on melancholic and psychedelic folk tunes. With "Early Love Music", released in 2008, Werkraum received more worldwide recognition. This album showed a characteristic mixture of traditional folk and modern folk rock.
Frank was also a member of the Alpine neofolk band Sturmpercht, where he played under the pseudonym Hanns Aufschring, while his work for live sessions and for studio and mastering engineering continued. In 2009 Werkraum split up with his label Ahnstern/Steinklang as well as Axel Frank’s collaboration with Sturmpercht finished. Since then, new works are in progress.
Several artists from the neofolk scene contributed to the Werkraum albums, including members of the British act Lady Morphia, German singer Antje Hoppenrath, Jason Thompkins of the US band Harvest Rain, and members of the late sixties US folk band Changes.
The Dream
Werkraum Lyrics

Under a pink and purple sky.
The bright sun smiled down upon us
With a twinkle in his eye.
Then I knew as we flew
That each moment we past
Took us further back in time.
Young sleeping boy in my arms.
The opening verse of Werkraum's 'The Dream' is a vivid portrayal of a dream where the dreamer and others navigate an iceberg, airborne in a surreal universe painted in pink and purple skies, under a bright sun that smiles down upon them. The dream seems to be enjoyable and exciting, made even more apparent by the sun's twinkle in his eye. However, as the dreamer and his companions move on, time itself seems to regress with every passing moment. Finally, the dream ends with the dreamer holding his young sleeping boy in his arms as they land.
The imagery of the surreal universe of pink and purple skies in the dream signifies that the world of our subconscious is boundless and anything is conceivable. Dreams have their unique logic, and we can travel through different worlds without being limited by the laws of physics or other constraints. The twinkle in the sun's eye represents a sense of wonder, signaling that dreams often hold more wonder and enchantment than the waking world.
In conclusion, Werkraum's 'The Dream' portrays the imaginative world of dreams and how the subconscious can take us on voyages through time and different worlds, where we can experience the marvellous and the unexpected.

I dreamed we were flying an iceberg
In my dream, we were piloting a giant ice formation through the air
Under a pink and purple sky.
We were traversing below a sky lit up with shades of pink and purple
The bright sun smiled down upon us
The vibrant sun blessed us with its warm and beaming presence
With a twinkle in his eye.
It seemed to have a glimmer of mischief in its gaze
Then I knew as we flew
In that moment, I realized that while we soared through the sky
That each moment we past
Every passing instant brought us further into the past
Took us further back in time.
Pushing us further away from the present into the annals of history
And as we landed I raised my
Upon our eventual touchdown, I lifted up my
Young sleeping boy in my arms.
Precious son, who had spent the journey wrapped in a peaceful slumber, into my embrace
