Her solo work is raga-inspired, psychedelic music, using guitar strings as basic sound material and sound effects as an instrument. Home-made one string bass stick used to produce low bell-like sounds out of an horror movie. Most tracks have vocals, usually strangely deformed through effect pedals. Track editing and cueing is kept to a minimum in the DIY, abrupt tradition, giving freshness to the music.
Weyes Blood has existed since at least 2006, starting as a conventional folk singer in an unamplified universe, then transforming into a more a crouched/hieroglyphic electronic chasm style, culminating in a European tour with Axolotl. After two seasons of hibernation and a relocation to Baltimore, she materialized her evolution and began writing/playing the darkly haunted narcotic drifter ballads that make up "The Outside Room", her first official full-length. The entire album was recorded, mixed and produced by Mering herself, then mastered by good friend Graham Lambkin. The record has shadows of "The Shadow Ring" in the oddly creaking ambient sounds and stark, nuanced production, which lend the eerily beautiful folk laments à la Nico. There’s still echoes of her old drone / tape-ghost-clouds moods on tracks like "In the Isle of Agnitio" and the long, bells-laden outro to "Romneydale", but the bulk of the LP is swooning and sweeping, with Natalie’s gorgeous, quasi-Teutonic vox leading the way.

I gave my strength
For years like an ox I pushed
And for years like a ship I sank
To the bottom of that unknown sea
[Verse 2]
I'm still learning to be free and not so somber
Searching on that field of stars
Do you know who you are? Can you dig up my tree? Can you find what's inside of me? Find the origin of my defeat
[Chorus]
In the beginning, I was all dreams
Times have changed
I'm no longer the same
[Verse 3]
I don't want you to leave
It's so bittersweet
That this is the time you met me
I'm going through a long phase
I don't try to relate
I don't really try to find someone to sedate me
Hard out for remedy its so bittersweet
You and me
[Chorus]
In the beginning, I was all dreams
Times have changed
I'm no longer the same
[Verse 4]
Everyday's a lesson in giving away
Stripes on my floor
Dark shots at my door
Have you ever walked in on a queen before?
I just went through the valley
I know it's changed
Fire from eternity
The origin of my dreams
[Chorus]
In the beginning, I was all dreams
Time caught up with me
Now I can finally see
The lyrics to Weyes Blood's song "In The Beginning" are introspective and overflowing with meaningful contemplation. The singer in the song shares that they have been weighed down by the heavy burden of pushing and sinking, symbolic of a life filled with struggles and challenges. Yet despite these hardships, the singer has not lost hope and is still on the journey of self-discovery. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges the importance of being free and staying optimistic, often staying up late to search the vast expanse of stars in the sky. The singer then pleads with their audience to help them uncover their innermost secrets, desires, and past failures, so they can finally move past those roadblocks and move forward. The chorus brings a sense of nostalgia and longing, with the singer reflecting on how they used to be filled with boundless dreams and possibilities but have since changed.
In the third and fourth verses, the singer shares their sense of loneliness and isolation, wondering if anyone can truly relate to them, and acknowledging the bittersweet nature of how timing and life events can bring people together or push them apart. The singer mentions a "long phase" they are going through, perhaps a period of transition or growth, and they're not looking for someone to numb or distract them from their emotions. In the fourth verse, the singer ends on a hopeful note and shares that every day is a new lesson in giving away and letting go of the past. They mention "stripes on my floor" and "dark shots at my door," suggesting they have been through some dark times, but they have also overcome those obstacles and are now mindful of the present moment and conscious of how far they've come.
