Persona Non Grata
Whale Bones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Push me out again
I’m unworthy of your time
It’s inconvenient for you
There’s no benefit
No addition for your gain
So I’m inadequate
I’ll no longer grasp for hope
Cause I don’t want to call you home
Those trusted lines are frail
Once so tight knit
Now a cheap fit
I won’t hold on like someone who believes it
Opportunistic
Ransom all I own
Beggars hands insisting
Butchers carve my bone
The trusted lines are frail
Once so tight knit
Now a cheap fit
I won't hold on like someone who believes it
Trusted lines are frail
Once so tight knit
Now a cheap fit
I won't hold on like someone who believes it
Cast me to the river
Dull me down

While I’m just trying to survive
Survive

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Persona Non Grata" by Whale Bones explore the feeling of being abandoned by someone you once trusted and held close. The song's narrator is reflecting on their relationship with this person, who sees them as unworthy of their time and inconvenient to have in their life. The singer realizes that they no longer want to chase after this person's affection, as there is no benefit or gain, making them feel inadequate. The once tight-knit relationship has become cheap and frail, and the singer acknowledges that they can no longer hold onto their hope or trust in this person.

The lyrics also touch on the idea of being taken advantage of, as the singer feels as though they are being held for ransom by this person. The person is carving away at the singer's very being, leaving them feeling like a beggar with nothing else to give. Despite all of this, the singer is trying to survive and move on from this toxic relationship, no longer wanting to be cast into the river and numbed down.

Overall, "Persona Non Grata" is a poignant and raw exploration of the pain and emotional turmoil that comes with being abandoned by someone you once trusted and cared for deeply.

@WhaleBones

This video was super conceptual and tough to formulate. Lots of drafts and mood boards. We added two extra shooting days to incorporate all the imagery we wanted. SO happy with the end result. I hope people are able to pick up on all of the symbolism and imagery throughout. What was your fav shot?

@kentkendall1698

Um maybe a weird pick but the pan along the maybe a Grouse wing at 10 seconds, its strange but if you get those little imagery shots right it changes everything. By the way You have blown me away over the last few weeks i am so impressed. I am a new fan.
Thank you.
