Half Life
Whether I Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see your lips are the staircase to your soul
Now you're fighting your feelings
And fearing the shame that you sown
All the times that I blindly followed you
Can't believe that I never saw the truth
I don't know what to do

You locked your arms around my mouth
I don't know what to do, I think I'm turning blue
I scream and shout, tear my lungs out
I don't know what to do, I can't get over you

They tell you what you want to hear
To feed the attention you hold so dear
Tread lightly across these lines
Playing again and again in my mind

There's a painful progress building you up stone by stone
There's a certain satisfaction I watching you fall from your throne
So pardon me, avoid the possibility
Of unraveling the patchwork in the way that you think

Why can't I see the truth?
I don't know what to do

You locked your arms around my mouth
I don't know what to do, I think I'm turning blue
I scream and shout, tear my lungs out
I don't know what to do, I can't get over you

I'll sleep peacefully
Knowing I pierced your skin
Despite all your walls
I still found my way in

I'm not another fall out, boy did we try
I may be a notch in your bedpost
But your life is a lie

Why can't I see the truth?
I don't know what to do

You locked your arms around my mouth
I don't know what to do, I think I'm turning blue
I scream and shout, tear my lungs out
I don't know what to do, I can't get over you

Oh no, I don't know what to do
And I, I can't get over you

I'll tell you what you need to hear
So close your lips and listen, dear

I think it's time that I said goodbye
Play it again and again in your mind

Overall Meaning

The song "Half Life" by Whether I is a haunting and emotionally charged track that explores the depths of heartbreak and betrayal. The opening line of the song, "I see your lips are the staircase to your soul," is a powerful metaphor that suggests that the way the person speaks and communicates gives insight into their true self. The singer then acknowledges that the person they once trusted is now "fighting their feelings" and "fearing the shame that they sown."

The chorus of the song is a cry of desperation, as the singer feels suffocated and trapped by their emotions. The phrase "You locked your arms around my mouth" is a vivid depiction of someone feeling silenced and rendered powerless by another person. Despite the pain and anguish they feel, the singer cannot seem to get over the person who has hurt them so deeply.

The bridge of the song hints at a sense of satisfaction that the singer takes in watching the other person's downfall. The lines "There's a painful progress building you up stone by stone / There's a certain satisfaction in watching you fall from your throne" suggest a feeling of vengeance or retribution. However, the singer acknowledges that they must avoid the temptation to tear down the other person's worldview and beliefs, recognizing that doing so may unravel everything for them.

Overall, "Half Life" is a raw and intense song that explores the complexity of human emotions in the face of heartbreak and betrayal.

This is what making a new album's about, we need moar of this! I feel most of this genre turns to pop rock or some other genre that isn't really catering to the core fans. Not a bad thing but it's really nice to see that some bands can still work with what they've made. This song may be softer but the album has more than enough to satisfy.

Zach Coleman

Definitely one of the best bands in the genre at the moment
