Parade
White & Torch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are the virus in your vile machine
Loud and proud and here to make a scene
Dressed like the night
In a march for our lives
All but ready for death
Unleash your magazines
Last of the liberals who would take a stand
Our dis-content will not play on demand
Sit back and judge with
Your usual smugness
While we lay down our arms
And go hand to hand
Heroes are obsolete
This century belongs to every you and every me
Old guards, get out of our way
Let us in and clean up this mess you made
We're gonna
Burn it all down, burn it all down
Burn it all down and start again
Burn it all down, burn it all down
Burn it down, burn it down, start again
We're gonna swarm your social media feed
Demonstration of a different breed
Temporal flashes
On permanent record
A watery dance
With the thought police
Only children to a cruel regime
Pushed to the brink since 2017
Us against them
It's an all-out defense
With God on our side
Fight back by any means
Wide-eyed innocence
The first line of casualties in a crackdown on dissent
Violence or on your knees
So, we swear Armageddon on the enemy
We're gonna
Burn it all down, burn it all down
Burn it all down and start again
Burn it all down, burn it all down
Burn it down, burn it down, start again
Burn it all down, burn it all down
Burn it all down and start again
Burn it all down, burn it all down
Burn it down, burn it down, start again
Reclaim rock 'n roll from the television screen
Someone's gotta show you what counterculture means
Entertainment value for the dead establishment?
This is our new soundtrack for the revolution!
Hey-oh, oh-oh
The powers that be will never learn
Lest we light up the house and watch it burn

The powers that be will never learn
Lest we light up the house and watch it burn

Overall Meaning

In "Parade," White & Torch paint a picture of a world in turmoil, where the younger generation is standing up against the injustices of the ruling class and the oppression of the system. The opening lines, "We are the virus in your vile machine/Loud and proud and here to make a scene," set the tone for the rest of the song, as the band declares their intention to disrupt and dismantle the status quo. The lyrics express frustration with the current political climate and the lack of action from those in power, urging the older generation to get out of the way and let new ideas take hold.

The verses describe the struggle of the youth movement, as they push back against oppression and fight for their rights. The lines "Our dis-content will not play on demand/Sit back and judge with your usual smugness" speaks to the frustration with the older generation's dismissive attitudes and unwillingness to listen. The chorus, with its repeated lines of "Burn it all down and start again," is a call to action, urging the listeners to take a stand and fight for change. The bridge, with its references to rock 'n' roll and counterculture, speaks to the power of music and art to inspire and motivate.

Overall, "Parade" is a powerful anthem for the youth movement of today, expressing their frustration and anger with the system and urging them to take action to bring about change.

Thought I'd type out the lyrics, as I've been enjoying this song since I bought it back in the day. I would like some help to clarify "Seen it" or "See it" and "Throwing" or "Throw in"?

Parade

Acting like I should do
You won’t even notice me
I try to hide my feelings
Always get the best of me
Knowing that you sleep with him
It’s just for you I waste my time
Throw in all my words to walk away

Waiting for your reasons
You won’t even notice me
How could you look so easy
If it’s just for you to say

Knowing that you sleep with him
It’s just for you I waste my time
Throw in all my words to walk away

Don’t say, don’t it, Don’t say it, don’t say it

Seen it in your eyes
I’m killing you

Don’t say it, don’t say it now

Just one word to say
I’m killing you

Don’t say it, don’t say it now

Acting like I should do
You won’t even notice me
How could you look so easy
If it’s just for you to say

Knowing that you sleep with him
It’s just for you I waste my time
Throw in all my words to walk away

Don’t say it, don’t say it, don’t say it
Seen it in your eyes
I’m killing you

Don’t say it, don’t say it now

Just one word to say
I’m killing you

Seen it, Seen it
Don’t sleep with him

Seen it, Seen it
Don’t sleep with him

Seen it, Seen it
Don’t sleep with him

Seen it, Seen it
Don’t sleep with him

Seen it, Seen it
Don’t sleep with him

Here we are some 40 years later !! Cannot believe this song didn’t make top 10 let alone no 1 fantastic song then and now

@MichaelSmith-vo1mi

Imagine writing a beautiful classic song like this and never being the massive hit it should of been. Tragic.

@goonerbeau

With "Pass the Dutchie" at No.1 in the UK, 'White and Torch' entered the Top 75.

By the time that Culture Club knocked Musical Youth off the summit, "Parade'" had disappeared, having peaked at #54.

One of the 'lost' singles of the early 80's.

@MarkWilson-xs7wt

Back in the mid 80's my local independent shop owner used to keep certain releases back just for me. I still have all five of their 12" releases and treasure them to this day.

@Q123Susie

Thank you I loved White & Torch in the 80's totally under-rated and should have been bigger than what they were

@mandyjudkins1913

What a beautiful missed classic

@Chrisamusic1

back, for one of the greatest lost singles of all time. RIP Steve Torch.

@helenfelton8804

Didn't know Steve Torch was dead. RIP a great musician and brave pioneer. Much under rated.

@Chrisamusic1

@@helenfelton8804 Yes, mate of mine, very humble bloke who took an interest in musicans and songwriters (including me) of all levels.

@helenfelton8804

I became aware of White and Torch because my fellah was CJ Fox who played drums /backing vocals on Parade. He was well known in Liverpool as Colin Fearns (real name). The production quality is excellent ;obviously money was being spent on them. Missing factor was luck...... Roy White was in the Truemen and they have a couple of live tunes on YouTube. Great musician,also. I don't know if they were a couple but look at the available pictures - two topless men. They were brave cos homophobia was rife in that time. They were both in Pink Military. You probably know more than I do about Steve Torch, having been lucky enough to be mentored by him. Great to talk to you xx
