City of lights
White Peter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White city of light youre dark in the middle
City of dreams i want to hide in your womb
White city of light you got me into trouble
City of lies you took me for a fool
Love is a better word love is a better word
Love is the only word that you understand
White city of love you're such a pretender
City of sleep you took all my energies
White city of light oh I want to surrender
City of schemes i am lost in your life
Love is a better word love is a better word
Love is the only word that you understand

Got to find me a better word
Got to get me an easy word

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics from White Peter's song "City Of Lights," the artist portrays a complex relationship with a city that is both captivating and deceptive. The city is referred to as a "white city of light," which initially suggests a place filled with hope, dreams, and inspiration. However, the opening line "you're dark in the middle" reveals that there is also a hidden darkness at the core of this city.

The artist expresses a desire to hide within the womb of this city, indicating a yearning for safety, comfort, and a place to escape from the harsh realities of the world. However, the city is described as a city of lies and tricks, highlighting how it has deceived and manipulated the artist. The city has taken advantage of their trust and made them feel foolish.

The recurring lyric "Love is a better word" suggests that amidst the deception and manipulation, love is the only genuine and meaningful concept that the artist finds solace in. The city might not understand or value love, but it remains the artist's guiding principle and source of understanding.

The second verse continues to highlight the city's deceptive nature, calling it a "city of sleep" that has drained the artist's energy. The artist feels lost in the city's intricate web of schemes and struggles to navigate its complexities. This could symbolize the challenges and illusions one faces when pursuing dreams within the city.

Once again, the artist emphasizes that "love is a better word" and the only word that truly resonates with their experiences. There is a yearning for a stronger, easier word - perhaps a word that captures the essence of love's simplicity and purity.

In summary, these lyrics paint a vivid picture of a city filled with captivating lights and dreams, but also harboring a hidden darkness and deceit. The artist grapples with the city's manipulation and longs to find solace and understanding in the concept of love, which becomes their guiding force amidst the confusion and complexities of the urban environment.

I heard this song on a flight. home and then they didn't say who it was.
I had to do quite a bit of research to find out who it was and even then no one knew the name of the song. So I listened to his entire catalog to find it. It became my favorite flying song.
