Illusion
White Witch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So now that you are ready for the path that lies
Follow you're a power but lead you're wise
Growing ever closer to one conclusion
You are lock and key to this illusion
False, false every man child
You control the sins you sent out
Everything is always part confusion
You are lock and key to this illusion

Overall Meaning

The song "Illusion" by White Witch is a deep and introspective look at the concept of self-awareness and the illusion of control over one's life. The first verse urges the listener to follow their instincts while also exercising caution and wisdom as they navigate a complex path. The idea of growing "closer to one conclusion" implies that the journey is ultimately leading to a greater understanding of oneself.

The chorus is both confrontational and affirming. The repeated phrase "You are lock and key to this illusion" suggests that the listener holds the key to unlocking their own illusions, but also that they are trapped in their own perceptions of reality. The line "False, false every man child" may refer to the idea that everyone is living in their own self-created illusion, weighed down by the sins they've committed in the past. The final line, "Everything is always part confusion," underscores the idea that life is complex and constantly changing, making it difficult to see things clearly.

Overall, "Illusion" is a reminder that we must look deeply within ourselves in order to see the truth of our lives. It suggests that we have more control over our perceptions and reactions than we might think, and that we are the ultimate creators of our own reality. However, it also acknowledges that it can be difficult to discern what is real and what is illusion, and that the journey toward self-knowledge is a continual process.

I remember decades ago seeing this record in a 1/2 Price Bookstore while flipping through all the used vinyl and stopping to look at the cover. I would often just buy a random album there without hearing it just for the hell of it, but sadly I didn't get this one. For some reason it stuck with me and when I went back to look for it again some time later it was gone. 30+ years later this is the first time hearing it and I feel like I really missed out. I'll get a hold of a copy as my mission in life now! :)
