Gambler
Whitesnake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been a gypsy for a thousand years
A victim of circumstance
I go wherever my destiny calls
I'm caught in a game of chance

I stand on the outside looking at love
I want to get inside
I stand on the outside looking at love
Just trying to get inside

No fame or fortune, no luck of the draw
When I dance with Queen of Hearts
A jack of all trades, a loser in love
It's tearing my soul apart

Still, I stand on the outside looking at love
I wanna get inside (I'm on the outside looking in)
I stand on the outside looking at love
Just trying to get inside
(I'm on the outside looking in)

The jack of diamonds and the ace of spades
Try to use me and abuse me
It seems the dealer won't give me a chance
I'm victim of circumstance

So I stand on the outside looking at love
I wanna get inside (I'm on the outside looking in)
I stand on the outside looking at love
Just trying to get inside (I'm on the outside looking in)

I stand on the outside looking at love
I wanna get inside (I'm on the outside looking in)
I stand on the outside looking at love
Just trying to get inside (I'm on the outside looking in)

I stand on the outside looking at love
I wanna get inside

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Whitesnake's song Gambler speak about the life of a gypsy or a wanderer, who has been roaming around for 1000 years, being at the mercy of fate. The singer is a person who is caught in a game of chance, continuously trying to get in love and get inside, but his bad luck or circumstances never let him win. He feels like a victim of fate when he is used and abused by people, whether it is the queen of hearts or the jack of diamonds and ace of spades.

The song reflects the helplessness of a person who is powerless to his fortune and is looking at love from the outside. Despite being a jack of all trades, he is a loser in love, and it is tearing his soul apart. The Gambler thinks that the dealer withheld his chance, and he is trapped in the game of life. But still, he keeps on trying to get in love and get inside, standing on the outside, looking at love but never getting a chance to get in.
