My Funny Valentine
Whitney Houston & Chaka Khan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

My funny valentine
Sweet, comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Oooh, mmm
Your looks are laughable
Un-photographable
Yet, you're my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little bit weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smart?
Don't, baby don't, don't you change your hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay, stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's...
Each day is Valentine's Day
Stay, little valentine, stay
Stay, stay, yeah yeah

Each day is Valentine's...
Each day is Valentine's Day

Overall Meaning

In the song "My Funny Valentine" performed by Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan, the lyrics delve into the complex emotions and perceptions surrounding an individual's beloved. The opening lines, "My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine," suggest that the subject of the song holds a special place in the singer's heart, providing both humor and sweetness in their relationship. The reference to a "comic valentine" implies that there is an element of playfulness and light-heartedness in their connection.

As the lyrics progress, the singer reflects on the physical appearance of their valentine, stating, "Your looks are laughable, un-photographable, yet you're my favorite work of art." This juxtaposition between aesthetic unorthodoxy and artistic admiration conveys a deep appreciation for the uniqueness and individuality of the beloved, celebrating them as a masterpiece in their own right despite societal norms of beauty and conventional attractiveness.

The question posed in the lines, "Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart?" delves into the idea that true beauty lies beyond physical appearance, emphasizing the importance of inner qualities such as intelligence and character. The singer seems to cherish the quirks and imperfections of their valentine, urging them not to change themselves for the sake of external validation or societal standards.

The repeated refrain of "Stay, little valentine, stay" and the declaration that "Each day is Valentine's Day" encapsulate a sentiment of unwavering love and devotion, where every moment shared with the beloved feels like a celebration of love and affection. The singer's plea for their valentine to remain true to themselves and to stay as they are reflects a deep emotional connection that transcends superficial expectations, highlighting the beauty of authenticity and acceptance in a relationship. The song ultimately conveys a message of unyielding love, appreciation for individuality, and the enduring nature of true affection.

I just love to listen to Black people sing. Nobody can take a song to the heights Black singers can. Sorry if this comment offends anyone, but it is truly how i feel. Black singers give life to songs that were on life support. Very expressive singers and people.

I can dig where ur coming from im black n still don't know how to describe what we do to a song n I'm a singer lol but I love the way Caucasians can write the words they come up with to put into a song is crazy good we have things we can really add to music if we come together music doesn't see color

@DaOrigTruthSeeker

Ronald Mickens Yes music does see color because music see a style. Blacks have a certain way they deliver a song and when you hear it, you know it is a Black person singing it. Even if you never saw their face before. The expressions of Blacks is very unique. Also certain songs sung by Blacks brings out certain feelings that no other race can capture.
