Finale
Wicked Original Broadway Cast feat. Kristin Chenoweth Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Now at last she's dead and gone
Now at last there's joy throughout the land
Good news!
Good news!
Who can say if I've been
But
Because I knew you
No one mourns the wicked
Because I knew you
I have been changed
No one mourns the wicked
Wicked!
Wicked!
The "Finale" in Wicked Original Broadway Cast feat. Kristin Chenoweth's song brings to the fore the fact that the Wicked Witch is finally dead, and there is happiness everywhere. The song is speaking about the death of the wicked witch and how her death brings joy to the land. It says that no one mourns the witch as she has been sent to her grave. It then switches to the character of Elphaba, who sings about how she has been changed by the one person who believed in her – Glinda.
Elphaba cannot say whether or not she was changed for the better, but she knows that she has been changed because of Glinda. The lyrics then touch on the idea that Elphaba and Glinda's friendship has led to significant growth and change in both of their lives. Without it, things would have been very different. It then ends by repeating the phrase "no one mourns the wicked," which underscores the idea that the witch's death has brought happiness and closeness between Elphaba and Glinda.
