Slang Teacher 12"
Wide Boy Awake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I said I said I said I say - here's a lesson you don't get
I said I said I said I say - I loop the loop when I get lose
I said I said I said I say - Ignition ignite your night out
I said I said I said I say - all the slang that a boy can use
Slang teacher no pain in the mouth
Slang teacher no long in the tooth
Slang teacher chew it up spit it out
Slang teacher chuck your daddy out the room

Watch the walk & watch the talk - you don't need no walking stick
Watch the way you talk & walk - you don't use no parachute
A bottle & a knife & fork - comes on down so slick & quick
Walkie-talkie watch that talk - what's the alphabet he picked

Creature's the feature-creature's the feature
He's gonna eat-cha slang teacher slang teacher

Gasoline gonna fill you up - gas'll get you out the door
Gasoline gonna pump you up - made to pick you off the floor

Gasoline gonna blow you up - then you'll never need no more
Gasoline gonna chew you up - that's what you chew your million for

Overall Meaning

The song "Slang Teacher" by Wide Boy Awake is a fun and playful way of teaching slang to the listener. The lyrics are filled with slang terms, and the singer urges the listener to pay attention to the lesson he has to teach, which they won't get anywhere else. He boasts that he can loop the loop and ignite their night out with all the slang a boy can use. The slang teacher wants his students to be fearless, to watch their walk and talk, and to not use any "walking stick" or "parachute." Instead, he wants them to be able to handle a bottle, knife, and fork with ease, and know what alphabet to use when using a walkie-talkie.

The chorus thus declares the singer to be a "slang teacher" who won't cause the listener any pain in the mouth or be long in the tooth. His slang lessons are meant to be chewed up and spat out, and one can even chuck their daddy out of the room to focus better. The song also plays with words such as "creature" and "feature," showing a love for language overall. Finally, the song talks of gasoline as a metaphor for energy, picking you off the floor, and chewing you up, which could represent living life to the fullest.

I was a bit young to be clubbing in 1982, being in jr. high, (barely) so I caught up later on round about 1986-88, was always hittnig up Malibu (also for tons of concerts into the 90s),
SPIT, 007 a few times, never got to THRUSH, but was at Paris NY in Huntington quite a lot for a few years there. I grew up in Levittown and there wasn't a minute WLIR wasn't on in my house, boombox, car stereo etc.., plus college radio which I got heavily into by 1985 or so. Used to hit the dance floor hard for this, also Tin Tin Duffy Kiss Me, etc.
