The Toledo, Ohio and Seattle, Washington natives (respectively) craft their standout synth-driven sound by pulling inspiration from a diverse array of genres and artists, including Depeche Mode, Hall and Oates, Peter Gabriel, Timbaland, Underworld, Madonna, and U2 (just to name a few). Their varied musical palates color each step of the creative process - which consists of a ritualistic exchange beginning with a demo that Casey sends to Caesar that go back and forth until a song is fully realized. As the two alternate, they weave their collective ideas together seamlessly despite their long distance. And this creative chemistry becomes quite evident upon listening to WBN’s new full-length 11 song album, ‘Oxygen and Atmosphere’.
As the title of the album’s first single “Bad Days” infers, the song itself is about depression, rough times, and eventually finding the resolve to overcome. An admittedly not-so-subtle homage to Peter Hook, “Bad Days” is a prime example of WBN’s ability to craft a song that resounds gently yet evokes powerful feelings. Casey’s tone is collected even as if to only casually announce “Some days are better than others”. The progressing intensity of the music rises with the growing affirmation in his delivery of the lyrics. Accompanying it is a sincerity that turns into confidence as he affirms, “I can see it”.
The album continues, exploring the limits of WBN’s already well-carved musical path, while transcending the confines of electronica and remaining unequivocally unique. On tracks such as “10,000”, future forward synth-pop is augmented by a live string arrangement. On “Watch it Burn”, Casey tells the tale of a childhood house fire with a passionate and compellingly honest vocal performance. Powerful, crisp vocals and classic keyboards meld with hard rock leanings, and live drums on sociopolitical criticism “Anatomy of a Human Bomb”, a track about asking a question about who we are today, but sadly, already knowing the answer.
With ‘Oxygen and Atmosphere’, Wideband Network cements their reputation as one of the most forward thinking electronic artists around. WBN expertly blends a combination of song structures and pop melodies, dance music production elements, and hard rock leanings, on this, their latest album and first for System Recordings. Top it all off with strong and emotionally unafraid vocals, and Wideband Network stands out distinctively from the pack. Keep in mind Wideband Network has achieved all of this while only ever collaborating in cyberspace....‘Oxygen and Atmosphere’, expanding the boundaries and breathing new life into dance music.
