Country Disappeared
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wake up we're here
It's so much worse than we feared
There's nothing left here
The country has disappeared
If the winter trees bleeding, leave red blood
The summer sweet dreaming, April blush
But none of that is ever gonna mean as much to me again.
Hold out your hand,
There's so much you don't understand
So stick as close as you can,
All of the best laid plans
You've got the white clouds hanging so high above you
You've got the helicopters dangling angling to shoot,
The shots to feed the hungry weekend news crew anchorman.

So every evening we can watch from above,
Crushed cities like a bug
Fold ourselves into each others guts,
And turn our faces up to the sun.

I won't take no
I won't let you go
All by yourself
Oh no you'll need my help
When the cold night shakes you like a chandelier
The snowflakes break through the atmosphere,
And melt on the blue breath of the auctioneers and disappear.

Every evening we can watch from above,
Crushed cities like a bug

Fold ourselves into each others blood,
And turn our faces up to the sun.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Country Disappeared" by Wilco convey a sense of loss and despair caused by the destruction of country, which can be interpreted in multiple ways. It could be referring to the literal disappearance of a country due to natural disasters or war, or it could represent the end of a certain way of life or a lost sense of identity within a country that has changed beyond recognition. The verses paint a vivid picture of a desolate land where the winter trees bleed red and the summer dreams are fading away. The line "The country has disappeared" serves as a powerful anchor to these visuals, emphasizing the idea that something has been lost beyond repair.

The chorus of the song takes on a somewhat uplifting tone, with the singer urging the listener to hold out their hand and stick together in the face of adversity. The image of white clouds hanging high above and helicopters angling to shoot is reminiscent of a war-torn country, but it could also suggest the idea of hope and resilience in times of crisis. The reference to "feeding the hungry weekend news crew anchorman" reveals the media's role in shaping perceptions of the situation, highlighting the contrast between the reality of the situation and how it is portrayed to the public.

Overall, "Country Disappeared" is a poignant commentary on the state of the world that captures a sense of loss and despair without being overly explicit. The lyrics allow for interpretation and reflection, leaving space for the listener to connect with their own experiences and emotions.

Based on quarantine time rules, if you have more Wilco footage from 10 years ago you must release it immediately as a public service. Thank you.

This album came out as I was about to leave NYC back to my continent after studying there. I was 20 and the best year of my life was coming to an end. I had seen wilco opening for Neil Young among many awesome shows there, and the last one before leaving was wilco playing some ballpark in Coney island. Ed droste and feist sang, it was a great show. Then i listened to the new album and as this song played it totally felt like the nostalgia i was already feeling. It made so aware of everything i had lived in that time abroad and how bad it felt having to leave. I can't listen to it and not feel that specific feeling, both happy and nostalgic. Watching this original footage now puts everything in perspective and just made my day. Life is better with music. Thank you very much, LB.

I remember seeing this way back when Wilco the Album was released, and it's just as relevant today as it was then.
