Nothing Up My Sleeve
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I won't ever cry for you
And you won't ever shed tears for me
There's nothing up my sleeve
That you haven't already seen

It's not that I don't care at all
We lost touch so long ago
It may be our anniversary
But I, I wouldn't really know

The phone won't ever ring
In the middle of the night
And if it ever does
I can assure you it won't be me

I'll find somebody new
And you might find somebody too
There's something up this sleeve
That you haven't already seen

It's not that I don't care anymore
We lost touch so long ago
It may be our anniversary
But I, I wouldn't really know

My phone won't ever ring
In the middle of the night
And if it ever does
I can assure you it won't be me

It's not that I don't care at all
We lost touch so long ago

It may be our anniversary
But I, I wouldn't really know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wilco's "Nothing Up My Sleeve" speak to a sense of detachment and resignation in a failed relationship. The first stanza establishes a sense of mutual indifference: the singer won't cry for their former partner, but they also acknowledge that the partner won't cry for them. The line "There's nothing up my sleeve that you haven't already seen" implies that there is no hidden vulnerability or emotion left to display - everything has been revealed and it's time to move on.

The second stanza adds some nuance to this feeling. The singer admits that they do "care at all," but it's a distant, faded sort of feeling due to the amount of time that has passed since the relationship ended. The fact that they "wouldn't really know" if it's their anniversary further cements the idea that the relationship is long gone. The third stanza repeats the sentiment that the phone won't ring with the ex-partner on the other end, and the singer assures them that if they do get a call from the singer, it won't be at night and it won't be romantic.

Yet the final stanza introduces a twist. The singer admits that they might find somebody else, and their former partner might as well. They assert that there is "something up this sleeve that you haven't already seen," perhaps suggesting that they will surprise themselves and move on to a new relationship. But even as they express this possibility, they repeat the refrain that they don't really care about their anniversary, ending the song on a note of ambivalence.

Some of those YHF demos were better than songs that actually made the album.

Is this the only time he has played this song live? It was never officially released. It was a YHF demo.
