In 1988, Downing finally made his solo debut, releasing the self-titled Will Downing. The album featured a new version of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." The track did not fair well on the R&B charts but it managed to reach #4 on the Dance charts. In the United Kingdom, "A Love Supreme" managed to reach #14 on the singles charts.
Downing has released many albums throughout his career, always on the brink of stardom but never quite making it. In 1989 he released Come Together As One and in '91, Dream Fulfilled. The latter featured the single "I Try" which reached #13 on the R&B charts, Downing's best performance to date.
1993 saw Downing's fourth album release with Love's the Place to Be. In 1995, he released Moods and in 1997, Invitation Only. Continuing his steady stream of releases, 1998 saw Pleasures of the Night, 2000 offered All the Man You Need and in 2002, Sensual Journey.
With so many albums under his belt, Downing never slows down, releasing Emotions in 2003, Christmas, Love and You in 2004 and Soul Symphony in 2005.
While Will Downing has never been a massive celebrity in the United States, he has seen reasonable success in the United Kingdom.

Guess you'll be glad to know
That I've learned how to laugh and smile
Getting over you was slow
They say old lovers can be good friends
But I never thought I'd really see you,
I'd really see you again
I go crazy
When I look in your eyes I still go crazy
No my heart just can't hide that old feeling inside
Way deep down inside
Oh baby, you know when I look in your eyes I go crazy
You say he satisfies your mind
Tells you all of his dreams
I know how much that means to you
I realize that I was blind
Just when I thought I was over you
I see your face and it just ain't true
No it just ain't true
I go crazy
When I look in your eyes I still go crazy
That old flame comes alive, it starts burning inside
Way deep down inside
Oh baby, you know when I look in your eyes I go crazy
Oh, oh oh, Oh
I go crazy
You know when I look in your eyes I go crazy
No my heart just can't hide that old feeling inside
Way deep down inside
I go crazy
The song "I Go Crazy" by Will Downing is a heartbreaking narrative about a man who is trying to come to terms with seeing his ex-lover again after a prolonged period of trying to forget her. The song chronicles the experience of bumping into an old flame and realizing that the feelings he had been suppressing all these years come rushing back the moment he looks into her eyes. The lyrics communicate a sense of vulnerability and raw emotion, as the singer is forced to confront how much he still longs for the woman he once loved.
The song starts with a polite greeting from the singer to his past lover: "Hello girl, it's been a while." He then acknowledges that he has learned how to laugh and smile without her, but getting over her was a slow process. The singer notes that people say old lovers can be good friends, but he never expected to see her again. When he sees her, he can't help but feel overwhelmed, and he confesses, "I go crazy when I look in your eyes." The chorus is repeated often in the song, conveying the feelings of heartbreak and longing. He acknowledges that he still has feelings for her when he says "No my heart just can't hide that old feeling inside, way deep down inside."
The second verse starts with the woman talking about her current boyfriend, and the singer realizes how much he had been blind in the past. He thought he was over her until he saw her face again. The song concludes with the singer admitting that he still goes crazy whenever he sees her, and he cannot help feeling this way. The lyrics of the song are universal, and they speak to anyone who has ever been in a similar situation. The pain of losing someone you love and then running into them again unexpectedly is something that many can relate to.
