Will Martin (born August 31, 1984) is a New Zealand-born classical crossover singer.[1]
Martin's first album, released in his native New Zealand, went platinum in 6 weeks. The album, called A New World, featured songs such as "Into the West", "If" and "Going Home".
Will commented on his success with “I am an entertainer; I sing, I can play the piano. I want to bring an entertainment factor to this kind of music because it has never really been done before.”
“I intend to rock out with a big orchestra behind me. I want to be real. I want to misbehave. I want to reach people. Dress me like a pop star and let me sing, and maybe some eighteen-year-old girl will go out and buy a classical album for the first time.”[citation needed]
Martin released his second album titled Inspirations in New Zealand in late November 2010.
[edit] BiographyWill Martin was born in Wellington, New Zealand, the son of a lawyer and a nurse. He has Māori ancestry on his mother's side. He was brought up in Auckland. The family had no musical tradition, and Martin began singing seriously only in his teens.
In 2007, Martin obtained a five-album deal with Universal Music worth $3 million.

That made me free, that made me proud
And some day, I will return
Home to the land, of the long white cloud
Where is home, I hear you say
So far away, so far away
I hear your voice from a far
But I must follow a star
So far away, so far away
In the song, upon the breeze
And in the roar of rolling waves
Like the roots of ancient trees
That run so deep, in the earth I crave
Where is home, I hear you say
So far away, so far away
I hear your voice in my heart
I miss you much more than I can say
But I must follow a star
So far away, so far away
[Instrumental]
Where is home, I hear you say
So far away, so far away
Where is home, I hear you say
So far away, so far away
The song "So Far Away" by Will Martin is a moving tribute to his homeland, New Zealand. In the opening verse, he describes the land that gave him life, made him free, and made him proud. He longs to return to the "land of the long white cloud," which is a Maori term for New Zealand. The chorus repeats the phrase "so far away" several times, emphasizing the distance between Martin and his beloved homeland. The second verse continues with the theme of distance, as Martin hears the voice of someone he loves from afar, haunting him no matter where he goes. He follows a star, presumably in search of his true home.
The third verse features evocative imagery of nature, with Martin describing the song being carried upon the breeze and in the roar of rolling waves. He compares his connection to New Zealand to the roots of ancient trees that run deep in the earth. The final chorus repeats the phrase "where is home, I hear you say," underscoring the ongoing search for a place of belonging. Martin acknowledges that he hears the voice of his loved one in his heart, and misses them greatly, but still feels compelled to follow a star and remain so far away.
Overall, "So Far Away" is a heartfelt and introspective song that explores themes of nostalgia, longing, and distance. Through vivid imagery and poetic lyrics, Martin conveys his deep connection to New Zealand and his ongoing quest to find his place in the world.
