Chandelier
Will Paquin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Catch my breath and hold it for me
I'm wasting my time, tryna make up my mind
Oh, I'm sitting here as the chandelier is whispering in my ear
Saying, "Can I get a cigarette?"
I know you'll never be mine

Can you come around tonight
And sing me a lullaby?
Just take my heart and break it
Can you come around tonight?
I might be the enemy
But nothing quite hits like you

Come on, take this pen and write for me
Oh, write me a song and I'll try to forget it
Oh, I'm standing there as the man upstairs
Comes crashing through the ceiling
Saying, "Where's my fucking cigarette?"
With fire in his eyes

Can you come around tonight
And sing me a lullaby?
Just take my heart and break it
Can you come around tonight?
I might be the enemy
But nothing quite hits like you

And as on my patience, starts to dry
And my feeling skids across the sand

They'll know that you've won
And I run back to where I came from

Overall Meaning

In Will Paquin's song "Chandelier," the singer explores conflicting emotions of longing and hopelessness. In the first verse, the singer catches their breath and feels caught in a state of indecision, while the chandelier nearby signifies the grandeur and lavishness that is just out of reach. The singer is aware that they will never have this luxury but still feels drawn to it. The chorus repeats and pleads for someone to come and break their heart, demonstrating the singer's desire for an intense emotional experience. The second verse has the singer asking someone to write a song for them to try and forget about their impossible longings. However, the man upstairs, who may symbolize authority or a higher power, interrupts with a violent outburst. The whole song implies a struggle with unrequited desire and the potential for losing control.

When analyzing the song, one can see that the lyrics follow a quasi-poet style of writing, where there is an abundant use of metaphors and imagery to convey feelings and ideas. Throughout the song, the singer compares their emotions to the chandelier, and the man upstairs is an allusion to authority or the gods. Additionally, the repetition of the chorus with a shift in tone between verses implies a tension between resignation and a desire to act, further accentuating the singer's struggle.
