Family Tradition
Williams Hank Jr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Country music singers, have always been a real close family,
But lately some of my kinfolks have disowned a few others and me.
I guess it's because I kind of changed my direction.
Lord I guess I went and broke their family tradition.

They get on me and want to know Hank why do you drink?
Hank, why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
Over and over everybody makes my predictions.
So if I get stoned, I'm just carrying on an old family tradition.

I am very proud of my daddy's name
All though his kind of music and mine ain't exactly the same.
Stop and think it over. Put yourself in my position.
If I get stoned and sing all night long it's a family tradition.

So don't ask me, Hank why do you drink?
Hank, why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
If I'm down in a honky-tonk some ole slick's trying to give me friction.
I said leave me alone I'm singing all night long it's a family tradition.

Lord I have loved some ladies and I have loved Jim Beam
And they both tried to kill me in 1973.
When that doctor asked me, "son how did you get in this condition?"
I said, "hey sawbones, I'm just carrying on an ole family tradition."

So don't ask me, Hank why do you drink?
Hank, why do roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?

Stop and think it over, try and put yourself in my unique position.
If I get stoned and sing all night long, it's a family tradition!

Overall Meaning

The song “Family Tradition” by Hank Williams Jr revolves around the concept of the family unit and how it is threatened when one decides to go against the norm. The lyrics suggest that although country music singers are a close family, this is not always the case as some members often choose to disown others who fail to uphold family traditions. Hank reveals that the reason he is disowned by some of his kinfolk is that he broke their family tradition by changing direction and living the songs he wrote.

The lyrics also address the issue of alcohol and drug abuse and how it is seen by some as a betrayal of the family tradition. Despite being questioned about his habits, Hank insists that getting stoned and drinking is a family tradition that he intends to uphold. He acknowledges that his father's music was different from his own but is still very proud of his name. In the end, Hank is determined to continue living his life, doing what he loves and carrying on the family tradition that he believes in.

Overall, “Family Tradition” is a powerful message about the importance of staying true to oneself, even when it means breaking away from traditional expectations. It speaks to the power of family bonds and how these can be tested when individuals choose to go against the grain.
