Ain't Misbehavin'
Willie "The Lion" Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one to talk with
All by myself
No one to walk with
But I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

I know for certain
The one I love
I'm through with flirtin'
It's just you I'm thinkin' of
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio

Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Overall Meaning

In the song "Ain't Misbehavin'," Willie "The Lion" Smith sings about being alone and happy, as he saves his love for someone special. The first verse sets the scene of a solitary life with no one to talk to or walk with, but his happiness becomes apparent as he proudly announces that he's "savin' [his] love for you." Smith's declaration of love is further emphasized in the second verse where he confesses that he's certain about the person he loves and has stopped playing the field - he's fully committed to them.

Smith then compares himself to Jack Horner, who was famous for sitting in a corner eating his Christmas pie and not doing anything or going anywhere. In a similar way, he's content to sit and wait for the person he loves because their kisses are worth waiting for. The repetitiveness of the phrasing of "Ain't misbehavin', I'm savin' my love for you" emphasizes the certainty of Smith's intentions and his commitment to his loved one. In the final verse, Smith reveals that he's a homebody who doesn't go out late and prefers the company of his radio. He's sending a message that he's not interested in playing the field or living the high life; instead, he's happy saving his love for that special someone.

thats one high pitched lion

Great!

@gersoneverett3396

You must be tone deaf if you think that this is 1/2 step high - try comparing this to the 1966 version. This sounds several keys higher not to mention that the timber is completely different. Please believe, please believe......

@andrewbarrett1537

It could be higher, but it's also possible that (besides the half-step difference shared with the Donald Lambert videos) he is deliberately affecting a higher voice here to kind of make fun of the tune while delivering it. I have to wonder what he thought about taking the request for this warhorse. Of course, he was an old friend of the composer Mr. Thomas Fats Waller.

@AzlanValentine

It’s a half step high
