4ever
Willow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The sun falls over the mountain
Ooh, you were my lifeline
It feels like a lifetime ago
When we first met, I was out my head
And so were you
I can't imagine ever going back now
And I never want to see you turn your back now
But I know you wanted to, know you wanted to
Know you wanted to
Wow

I know, you know, we know this can't last forever
I know, you know, we know this can't last forever

I know, you know, we know this can't last forever
I, I know

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Willow's song "4ever" sets a nostalgic tone that reflects on the past while acknowledging that some things cannot last forever. The sun falling over the mountain is a metaphor for the end of an era or a relationship. The line "Ooh, you were my lifeline" suggests that the person being addressed is/was incredibly important to the singer and played a crucial role in their life. The following lines harken back to the beginning of the relationship, when both parties were so infatuated with each other that they were "out of their heads." Despite that initial intensity, the singer knows that they can't go back to those early days, and they don't want to see the other person turn away from them, though they know that they wanted to at some point.

The chorus drives home the idea that everything has an expiration date and that, as much as the singer might like it to last forever, this relationship is no exception. The repetition of "I know, you know, we know" creates a sense of unity between the singer and the person being addressed, as if they are both acutely aware of the inevitability of the end. The final line, "I, I know," feels resigned but also accepting, as if the singer is ready to move on from this chapter of their life.

I’m 52 years old and never considered you, no disrespect, I heard this on a commercial for the ear phones and had to find it. I was on vacation with my daughter and put this on constant replay. It makes me grateful for my life and all the damn hard times I’ve had. Incredible voice and so liberating . So personal and soul touching. Thank you. Can for life now. Thank you even at my age.
