You Won't See Me Cry
Wilson Phillips Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wish I had all you ever wanted.
I'd give it right to you.
But I don't have it.
How could I ever find it?
The strength to let you go, 'cause I don't have it.
When will I have it?
And it goes and it goes on.
And it goes on.

You won't see me cry.
You know I decided.
that I'm gonna pull myself together and find a way to fight it.
I'm gonna have to hide it.
You won't see me cry.
You won't see me cry.

I've got no choice but to face it.
I have to let you know that I don't like it.
My love is good for someone and it may take some time,
but I will find him.
Why should I waste it?
When I go, (when I go)
when I go on, I will go on.

You won't see me cry.
You know I decided.
that I'm gonna pull myself together and find a way to fight it.
Oh no. Even if I have to hide it.
You won't see me cry.
You won't see me cry.
You won't see me cry.

You know I decided. That I'm gonna pull myself together

I finally decided and I found the way to fight it.
So you won't see me cry.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wilson Phillips's song "You Won't See Me Cry" convey the emotional struggle of letting go of a past love. The singer expresses her wish to give her former lover everything they ever wanted, but acknowledges that she doesn't have the ability to do so. She questions whether she will ever find the strength to move on, admitting that the process of letting go goes on and on. Despite the pain and difficulty of the situation, the singer resolves to hide her tears and fight to move on without her past love, declaring that they will not see her cry.

The song captures the universal experience of heartbreak and the pain of saying goodbye to someone you once loved deeply. The lyrics showcase the struggle many people undergo after a breakup, where they feel like they don't have the emotional fortitude to move on. The final uplifting line of the song where the singer declares her determination to fight on and not show her pain is especially empowering, offering hope to anyone listening who may be in a similar situation.

I feel old reminiscing about this gem of a song, because I was in high school when this album (Shadows and Light) came out, a very successful follow-up to their self-titled debut album, went to their concert, and bought everything Wilson Phillips..LOL!

I think this is one of the prettiest songs ever done in rock music. Wilson Phillips, IMHO, are totally underrated! It's little surprise how fantastic their melodies and harmonies are, given they are offsprings of Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys, not to mention John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas! What a terrific musical legacy the Wilsons and the Phillips families have! Let's hope "it will go on." Thanks so much for posting this!

I forgot all about this song, I just love this song! its wonderful to discover it again and discover the Wilson Phillips. I don't think there as been another girl band as good as this for harmonies, very underated.
