Broken Glass
Wilt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Would you ever try and bury this?
Down for the rest of my life and then
The future past is watching me
Down for the rest of my life and then
What is it that you want to see?
Down for the rest of my life and then
Never think afar but a day ahead of me
Down for the rest of my life

Now its so informal and I'm pardoned by my circumstance

[[chorus:]]
Doubt all the words that you've never heard
My friends played a joke on you and that's what really hurts
Sounds as if you're best with them but I don't really mind
Can I see the distance now that I've been left behind?

Did you want another chance to
Down for the rest of my life and then
I'm a man with a mission and I wanted you
Down for the rest of my life and then
What's all this twist you're selling me?
Down for the rest of my life and then
And by the look through the glass you're giving me
Down for the rest of my life

[chorus]

Oh would you ever leave it alone?
And I call this place a part of my home
So could you please just leave me alone

But I could not agree to...

[chorus x2]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wilt's song Broken Glass are emotional and introspective, with the theme of intense pain and heartbreak running throughout. The opening verse talks about burying the pain and trying to move past it, but the future keeps watching you, reminding you of the past. The singer seems to be stuck in this cycle of pain and can't get rid of the trauma. The line "Never think afar but a day ahead of me" suggests that the character is trying to survive by living day by day, unable to think about the future or plan for it.

The chorus captures the core theme of the song. The singer is doubting everything they ever believed and everything they stand for. They are struggling to find something to hold onto, something true and real amidst the chaos of their lives. The line "My friends played a joke on you and that's what really hurts" hints at betrayal and heartbreak caused by someone the character trusted. The character wants to see the distance as they feel left behind and isolated.

In the second verse, the singer seems to go through a phase of reflection and self-doubt. They question what they did wrong and if they were given another chance, would they make different choices? Ultimately the song ends with the plea to be left alone, but the scars of heartbreak and betrayal left behind can be seen in the final chorus.

I was born in 1976. My father was born in 1943.

All he talked about no matter who we were watching play in the 1980s until his passing in 2001 was Wilt, Bill Russell, Kareem, Moses Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Oscar Robertson “The Big O” was the only “small” who my father talked nonstop about.

When Shaq entered the league I’d tell him none of those bigs could do anything with Shaq and my pops would lose it.

My mother got so tired of us debating Wilt v Shaq. When Shaq lost to Hakeem in 1995 my pops was on an “I told you so” campaign, grinning and laughing at me and the tv the entire series and I was 18 and cluelessly shocked…😂.

Understanding the game of basketball as I’ve gotten older, and learning more about Wilt….pops was right.

I owe my father an apology because I’m thinking he was right all along.

How can a human being be that tall + that fast + that agile + that strong + that coordinated + that amount of stamina all combined into one? Then consider he was on the regimens known at that time. Give Wilt today's training, nutrition, and "supplements" and it would make a monster that topped the limit of a human's physical ceiling.
