The Deep
Wind and Sail Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How much do I love you?
I'll tell you no lie
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

How many times a day do I think of you?
How many roses are sprinkled with dew?
How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?

And if I ever lost you, how much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?

How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?

And if I ever lost you, how much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?

How high is the sky?
How high is the sky?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wind and Sail's song "The Deep" are a series of questions aimed at expressing just how much the singer loves their partner. The questions are rhetorical and are meant to convey a sense of infinity, depth and magnitude that can only be used to describe something as profound as love. The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song as the singer promises to be truthful and transparent about the extent to which they love their partner.

The second verse goes on to ask how often they think of their partner, and the question is a rhetorical one as the answer would be infinite. The reference to the roses sprinkled with dew is a metaphorical question that emphasizes the beauty and delicacy of their love. The third verse continues to explore the theme of infinity by posing a hypothetical question about how far the singer would go to be with their partner. The idea is to highlight the enormity of their love and willingness to make great sacrifices.

The last verse is perhaps the most poignant, as it imagines a world without their partner in it. The question about how much they would cry emphasizes the gravity of such a loss and drives home the message that the depth of their love is profound and all-consuming. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of love that is boundless, unending and all-encompassing.

I love how the child's voice at first seems to add a layer of lightheartedness to the song, only to notice the very disturbing and vile underlying meaning when you remember that this is a pirates' song and that the lyrics are... you know what I mean.

I love that deepness.
Thank you for making this.

You make a valid point

@EllAntares

It both references Drunken whaler (Dishonored song) and Hoist The Colors from POTC that way

@connieho733

May I ask what the song means?

@crazyabe4571

personally- I'd like a version without the child's voice, because children simply sound inherently annoying to me.

@Nico_di_Angelo_111

I will never get tired of these pirate sea shanties, such a refreshing change to normal music that is overplayed on the mainstream!!

Exactly

@PetiteCamomille

What's "normal music"? 🤔

@survivalextraordinaire3572

Check out The Irish Rovers if you don't already know who they are. This song references their song "Drunken Sailor" a few times.
