The group was formed in early 2015 through the merger of two prominent Vietnamese metalcore bands: Epione and Alive In Sight. The band name was inspired by a character from the video game Defense of the Ancients.

The current members of Windrunner include vocalist Nân, guitarists Nam Đào and Trung Tone, bassist Trang Chuối, and drummer David Hudd. Former members include vocalist Dương Bùi, guitarists Minh Cò, bassist Híu NT, and drummer Bờm. Dương Bùi left the band to pursue higher education.

In the middle of 2015, Windrunner released their debut EP titled "VUI". The EP gained recognition in Europe through Japanese independent label First and Last Records, which also handled sales in Japan and Southeast Asia. Notable guest musicians on the EP included Michael Lawler of multinational post-hardcore band In Vice Versa and Hoàng Long of Clockworks.

Windrunner has shared the stage with prominent bands such as King Ly Chee, Attila, Secrets, Benighted, and Coldburn, performing in various Southeast Asian countries. In 2016, singer Dương Bùi was interviewed by the British broadcaster BBC during the band's performance at a music festival in Vietnam.

In September 2018, Windrunner signed with US label Famined Records, with distribution managed by punk label Victory Records. Their debut album, "MAI", was announced for release on November 30, 2018. It takes its name from a spring flower and explores various life challenges. Each song on the album is named after flowers and trees, symbolizing different hardships. According to Dương Bùi, the album's lyrics revolve around the theme of endurance.

Musically, Windrunner presents a unique take on post-hardcore, drawing comparisons to bands like Invent, Animate, Crystal Lake, and Earthists. The band's lyrics touch upon personal experiences, as well as themes related to ancestor worship and Vietnamese traditions. Windrunner's music encompasses a diverse range of influences, including blues, extreme metal, metalcore, djent, ambient, and dark melodic elements.

The band has actively toured Vietnam, Southeast Asia, and South Korea, supporting acts like Attila, Secrets, Benighted, Hiss From The Moat, Coldburn, King Ly Chee, Born From Pain, and Earthists, among others.
