Throw Down The Sword )
Wishbone Ash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus:]
Throw down the sword
The fight is done and over
Neither lost, neither won
To cast away the fury of the battle
And turn my weary eyes for home

There were times when I stood at death's own door
Only hoping for an answer

[Chorus]

There were times when I stood at death's own door
Only searching for an answer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Throw Down The Sword" reflect the singer's weariness with the seemingly endless battles he has had to fight. The lines "The fight is done and over/Neither lost, neither won" suggest that the singer has come to realize that conflict doesn't always result in clear-cut victory or defeat. Rather, the cost of battle is paid by all who are involved, and the only thing left to do is to accept it and move on. This is reinforced in the lines "To cast away the fury of the battle/And turn my weary eyes for home", which suggest a longing for peace and stability.

The second stanza suggests that the singer has come close to death, but ultimately survived. The line "Only hoping for an answer" implies that the singer was seeking some greater purpose or meaning to the violence he had endured. The repetition of the stanza reinforces the sense that the singer has been through numerous trials and tribulations, but has persevered.

Throw down the sword,
The fight is done and over,
Neither lost, neither won.
To cast away the fury of the battle
And turn my weary eyes for home.

There were times when I stood at death's own door
Only hoping for an answer.

Throw down the sword,
And leave the glory -
A story time can never change.
To walk the road, the load I have to carry -
A journey's end, a wounded soul.

There were times when I stood at death's own door
Only searching for an answer.

This was my Dad's funeral song. He chose this when he knew he was losing his battle with lung cancer. It means a lot!

@kamakirinoko

Wow, an awesome choice. RIP your dad . . . may he rest in Argus Heaven, where I hope to someday lie in state . . .

what a warrior that man must have been to come to terms with his own fate. I tip my cap to the soldier

@alanmcclelland5245

God bless him. I know he's still rockin out with WA

@stefanveatch2

I am so sorry. I love your dads choice. Some of us music people want to go out that way with song. ----I think this one might be it for me too. So much music, but this one is special. The solo is one of the best in rock -n-roll. Might be the best with the words, and the song. ---I hope to meet him one day out there in music land. ---I will tell him you love him, but he already knows that. I still will take a bit of what you said to him with me.

I can't believe this song and the whole album is almost forgotten now and will probably never make it to the ears of the younger generation. This is an absolute masterpiece.

I can assure you, it has reached our ears.

I share your concern. This album beat out "Machine Head" by Deep Purple for album of the year in England that year. "Argus" is incredible, yet no airplay in the U.S. I've heard "Blowin' Free" once on U.S. radio, that's it. Never anything else. A travesty.
