Desolate
Woe Is Me Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out in the everglades,
Sleeping in with the poor is a fortune for the brave,
I can easily say that we will never change
But be implacable and never lose your flames.

Wouldn't you say that the world has spit on you enough.
Unanswered prayers, sleeping under streetlights
And I don't understand the danger of talking them up
Every night,
You salvage every skyline,
Only enough so that you might have the chance to feel fine.

Swear to God I believe we've had enough trying to save the world,
Did you hear me,
We have had enough.

This is how we close the show,
So sit back and listen,
'Cause it's not over yet.

You think you know us
Well you don't know shit.

Overall Meaning

The opening of the song "Desolate" by Woe Is Me portrays the hardship and suffering of living in the everglades, a swampy region inhabited by poor people. The singer reflects on the fact that being poor is a fortune for the brave because it takes courage to endure the challenging conditions. He continues to say that despite the difficult terrain, they will never change their ways and remain determined to keep their spirits high. The last line emphasizes the importance of being implacable and never losing one's flames, signifying the need to hold on to one's passion and motivation.

The second verse talks about the frustrations that come with being homeless and how the world seems to be against you. The singer notes the bleakness of unanswered prayers and how he has had to resort to sleeping under streetlights. He acknowledges that some people might not be able to understand the danger of talking them up, which might relate to the stigma surrounding homelessness. Despite these setbacks and challenges, the singer is determined to salvage every skyline, every moment of hope, to feel fine. The chorus emphasizes the exhaustion and the futility of trying to save the world, and the need to express that they have had enough.

The closure of the song is a statement of defiance against the audience. He touches on the misconception of the audience, who believe that they know him well, but the singer asserts that they don't know anything. It portrays his frustration with the audiences who might not understand the complexity of his situation and the turmoil he faces, thus needing to speak up.

@shibbyska

I think the beauty of this song is that it leaves you wanting more. It's short but it never outstays its welcome with a 4th chorus like some songs do. It says what it wants, with no apparent structure and ends. Perfect.

@johnpcheramie

I wish issues would do a full version of this with Jonny.

@mason-g4700

jonny gets stale with his songs

@vinny1537

I find myself rewind the “we have had enough” line over and over. How can you say jonny gets stale? The guy has destroyed his voice hitting all these insane notes over the years. While Tyler Carter basically stopped singing and went full pop in issues

@soysaucehairdye7869

He sounds like Michael Jackson on that part.

@MarsCandyBar

The one main line Jonny has in this song stands out so much. Its great.
