City Lights
Wolf Jaw Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm in Love with the lights
I don't need no one pretty
in the dead of night Yeah
Dancing out on the street
With everyone that i see
Just looking for some answers
Can't afford the Champagne
Cant afford the Life
I'm just addicted to the city lights
Sharp dressed man is what i want to be
I'm just addicted to the city streets
Can't afford no food
or no place to stay
Every one that I ask now
Oh they just look the other way
Can't afford the Champagne
Cant afford the Life
I'm just addicted to the city lights
Sharp dressed man is what i want to be
I'm just addicted to the city streets
The song "City Lights" by Wolf Jaw is an ode to the love and addiction for the city's vibrant and energetic atmosphere. The opening lines "I'm in love with the City, I'm in love with the lights" capture the euphoric feeling of a person who is infatuated with the city and its never-ending hustle and bustle. It's a city that is alive at all hours, and the singer revels in its energy. The lyrics express that while the city may not have glamour, it's a place where one can disappear and find themselves, as explained in the line "Just looking for some answers, just trying to Stay alive".
The chorus sings, "Can't afford the Champagne, Can't afford the Life, I'm just addicted to the city lights." It reflects the reality of how expensive and challenging life in the city can be, but the hustle and the desire to make some meaning out of it, keeps the singer coming back for more. The song portrays an image of a person who feels lost in their life and finds solace in the city, where they can dress well and walk around the streets feeling powerful, represented in the lines "Sharp dressed man is what I want to be, I'm just addicted to the city streets."
Overall, the song 'City Lights' references a person who is drawn to the energy, vibrance, and chaotic pace of city life. They are searching for answers to their problems while thriving on the city's buzzing energy, yet still struggling with the financial realities that such a life entails.

This band seems to have taken a time machine from the 90s. I like it.

Man, another band I learn about due to the passing of one of their members. Death sucks! I wish their families and friends peace in these times of loss.
A new fan, mourning with you all. 😥

Excellent, high-level musicality; powerful bass-drum kick and driving rhythm under streaming guitars - it's all good but the vocals show timbre and range that could work on Broadway or in a primal cave. You guys should compose a new rock musical to sooth this tortured world - there is plenty to say given tensions & conflict from the resurgence of Authoritarianism, fascism and racism. A rock musical could encapsulate the Zeitgeist just as poets offer words for the inexpressible. Great video from The Bad Flowers!
