Woods have released 12 albums, the latest being Perennial. Pitchfork Media reviewed one of their previous albums, Songs of Shame, giving the band its "Best New Music" designation and describing the sound as "a distinctive blend of spooky campfire folk, lo-fi rock, homemade tape collages, and other noisy interludes, all anchored by deceptively sturdy melodies."
Singer-guitarist and founder Jeremy Earl also runs the rising Brooklyn label Woodsist, for whom the band releases their work.
Prior to their initial output as Woods, founding members Jeremy Earl and Jarvis Taveniere, along with former member Christian DeRoeck, performed together in the band Meneguar, in which Taveniere sang and played guitar, and Earl played drums. Meneguar released three albums, beginning with I Was Born At Night (released on cassette in 2004 by Fuck It Tapes, on LP the following year by Magic Bullet Records, and reissued in 2006 by Troubleman Unlimited). The group released two subsequent albums, Strangers in Our House (Release the Bats Records, 2007) and The In Hour (Woodsist, 2008) prior to shifting their focus full-time to recording and performing as Woods.

And I had dreamed of that
You said my name and I remembered how your voice sounds
I can't forget the way you looked at me
And I was scared by that
That's when I felt you were slipping away, away
And I closed my eyes
I've got nothing left
And heaven knows it's our one last chance
Hang on to me for as long as you can
Pull me in, pull me in
Hang on to me for as long as you can
Pull me in, pull me in
Nobody knows me like you know me, darling
Maybe I'm scared by that
But now I'm standing in your doorway and I know it's been a long time
I'm trying to stop but I keep staring at you
And your staring right back
I know we both tried to run but it's right
And I'm right here
And I closed my eyes
Pray hoping someone hears me
I've got nothing left
And heaven knows it's our one last chance
Hang on to me for as long as you can
Pull me in, pull me in
Hang on to me for as long as you can
Pull me in, pull me in
Never thought you'd lose your grip
Never thought you'd let me slip away, away
We fought
So hard
To have
One more chance for this
Don't lose your grip
Hang on to me for as long as you can
Pull me in, pull me in
Hang on, I'll hang on for as long as I can
Pull me in, pull me in
Pull me in, pull me in
The lyrics to Woods's song "Hang On" describe a relationship that is on the verge of falling apart. The singer hears the door before seeing their partner, and it triggers memories of their past. The mentioning of the partner saying the singer's name and how their voice sounds implies a deep connection and familiarity. However, the singer feels a sense of fear when they see their partner's gaze, as if they are starting to drift away from them.
In this moment of realization, the singer closes their eyes and prays, hoping that someone will hear their plea for help. They feel like they have nothing left, and they recognize that this is their one last chance to salvage their relationship. The repeated plea to "Hang on to me for as long as you can" suggests a desperate desire to hold onto their partner and keep them close.
The singer acknowledges that nobody knows them as well as their partner does, and this knowledge scares them. They find themselves standing in their partner's doorway after a long time apart, struggling to tear their gaze away. It becomes apparent that both individuals have tried to run from their problems, but the singer believes they are meant to be together and wants to be present in that moment.
The bridge reinforces the importance of not letting go. The line "Never thought you'd lose your grip, never thought you'd let me slip away" communicates a sense of surprise and disappointment in the partner's previous lack of commitment, but also emphasizes the urgency of not repeating that mistake. The battle they have fought to have one more chance for their relationship should not be in vain.
In the end, the singer is willing to hang on for as long as they can, seeking to be pulled back into their partner's embrace. The repetition of "Pull me in, pull me in" in the closing lines emphasizes their longing to be held close and their hope that their partner will reciprocate this desire.
