Wyvern Lingo have been writing music together since they met at age 11. They originally bonded over hand-me-down albums of Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkel along with the R’n’B of the 90s/00s that then dominated the radio. Their music stitches together this tapestry of influences, all united by their chilling vocal harmonies.
Originally from Bray, Co. Wicklow, Wyvern Lingo have been achieving recognition on the Dublin scene for their "soulful, powerful vocals and harmonies." Their set ranges from stripped back a cappella and acoustic folk tunes to heavier, fuller compositions utilising full kit and synth bass.
Over the last few years they have played countless Irish festivals such as Knockanstockan and Electric Picnic and have released their first EP. Along with each member balancing college courses, full-time employment and other musical projects, Wyvern Lingo have spent the next year working on their second EP, "The Widow Knows", which was released independently in August 2014.
Their debut album, Wyvern Lingo, was released in 2018 and went to number 1 on the Independent Irish Charts, and the Irish iTunes charts and was chosen as one of the Top 10 albums of 2018 according to the Irish Times and Hot Press.
Aurora
Wyvern Lingo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Mine did the same
Stating the facts and hoping they might explain
This pain
Your face
So strained
But honey I see you as an aurora in the sky
And I know that this won't be the kind of love you want right now
But it is yours to hold when the night is burning out
And awake you lie, oh awake you lie
I watched as you were shrinking
I did the same
Mending your thoughts before thinking
Drifting astray
Your name
It fades
But honey I know you as an aurora in the sky
So rare are you, some pure elysian light...
In these lyrics to Wyvern Lingo's song "Aurora," the singer addresses someone who is going through a difficult time. The first two lines, "I know that your mind's racing, Mine did the same," suggests that the singer understands the turmoil and racing thoughts that the person is experiencing, as they have gone through it themselves. They acknowledge the person's attempt to rationalize and understand their pain, indicated by the line "Stating the facts and hoping they might explain."
The next lines, "Your face, So strained," convey the visible distress and strain that is apparent on the person's face. This could be a reflection of the emotional weight they are carrying. However, despite the person's pain, the singer sees them as something beautiful and rare, just like an aurora in the sky. The aurora represents a breathtaking natural phenomenon, and by comparing the person to it, the singer is implying that they possess a unique and captivating essence.
The line "And I know that this won't be the kind of love you want right now" suggests that the singer understands that the person may not be seeking or ready for love in their current state. They acknowledge the person's need to hold their pain and navigate through the darkness on their own. However, the singer assures them that when their emotional turmoil subsides, this love will be waiting for them. The night symbolizes the difficult and challenging times, while "burning out" implies that these times will eventually fade away.
The lyrics then shift focus to the singer observing the person's gradual withdrawal and shrinking away, as indicated by the lines "I watched as you were shrinking, I did the same." The singer understands the person's tendency to retreat into their thoughts and mend them before speaking or sharing them with others, depicted by the line "Mending your thoughts before thinking."
The person's name also fades, suggesting a loss of identity or a diminishing presence. Despite their internal struggles and fading external presence, the singer continues to see them as an aurora in the sky, emphasizing their unique and luminous nature. The phrase "Some pure elysian light" further reinforces the person's ethereal beauty and suggests that they possess a rare and divine quality.
Overall, these lyrics convey a sense of empathy and understanding towards someone going through a challenging period. The singer not only acknowledges their pain but also sees their beauty and uniqueness. They offer reassurance that love will be there for them when they are ready to accept it, while also acknowledging the person's journey of self-healing and growth.
