Read Full Bio ↴XIII. Století ("13th century" in Czech) is a Czech gothic rock band.
The beginning of the group can be dated to 1990. It arose from the ruins of punk trio Hrdinové Nové Fronty ("The Heroes of the New Front", H.N.F.). The frontman of XIII. Století, Petr Štěpán, says:
It is logically only one genre, which can grow up from punk past, without declining their music from the past.
During evolution, the membership of the group changed many times, but the original members of singer Petr Štěpán and drummer Pavel Štěpán have remained with the group throughout.
The most important part of the group's activity is the concerts, well known as "monstrosity" shows. The longevity of the gothic group is remarkeable in the Czech Republic.
During their years they have released many albums. The first was a CD Amulet with a fresh guitar sound. The second was an album with a more "pop" sound, Gotika. These two albums were released by the company Monitor. Then XIII. Století started co-operation with the company Happy Music and released through them three dark gothic albums - the energetic Nosferatu, Werewolf and Ztraceni v Karpatech.
XIII. Století became very popular in Poland and Slovakia, especially after their attendance at the Gothic Fest in Bolkow in 1999. Their popularity grew, not only in Poland but in Italy and other European countries.
The activities of Petr Štěpána are very diverse - from appearance in theatre to writing books. He is an author of The Book of Nosferatu - Vampire Bible.
Between 2001 and 2003 there was long pause in their musical output, but the band is now back again.

Když tě srazím na kolena do železných pout
Masochismus duše budoucnost vítá
jak v poslední křeči tanec svatýho Víta
Padající hvězdy co září jako den
v holocaustu nevinnosti spálí na popel
Purpurové řeky tam na břehu jsi stál
To jen víc
jen dál
Vendetta přichází
jak blesky z nebe
My spatřili jsme záři úsvit nových dnů
vládu monokultury a korporaci snů
Rozbořený Disneyland v kouři Babylon
Virus dobil Matrix vypalte Sion
The lyrics of Vendetta by XIII. Století tell a story of rebellion and revolution, calling listeners to join in the fight against oppressive structures. The chorus of the song, "Vendetta už volá, k ohni se mnou pojď" (Vendetta is calling, come with me to the fire) is a call to arms, inviting listeners to join the fight. The first verse describes the destruction of those who stand in the way of revolution, with the singer proclaiming "when I strike you down to your knees, in iron chains, the masochism of the soul will welcome the future." The future, it seems, is one of chaos and destruction, with a dance of St. Vitus, a reference to a condition believed in medieval times to be the result of possession by evil spirits.
The second verse continues this theme of revolution, with references to iconic images of destruction and oppression. The "falling stars that shine like day" are a symbol of hope and freedom that are consumed by the "holocaust of innocence," an obvious reference to the atrocities of World War II. The singer then references the purple rivers, a salute to the iconic dystopian novel The Purple Cloud by M. P. Shiel, and the new barbarians who march under the flag of Leni Riefenstahl, a filmmaker who was associated with the Nazi regime in WWII.
Overall, Vendetta is a powerful song of revolution that calls on listeners to join in the fight against oppressive structures, summoning imagery of destruction and chaos in the service of a greater good.
