Unconsolable
X Ambassadors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hope we stay
Thick as thieves, butter and bread
Pillars of colonial homes
And I wish I could shout you out
False start
Don't get your cane caught in the cracks
Buckle your seatbelts, polluting the airwaves
Single and lonely

And you say you are
Unconsolable
And you say you are
And you say you are
Unconsolable
Uncontrollable
Come up to my house
Drink with my friends
You can lay on my couch
Aching to start all over again
We going back to your room
But wait a minute it's my room
Was it something I said?
Was it something I said?

And you say you are
Unconsolable
And you say you are
And you say you are
Unconsolable
Uncontrollable

Come up to my house
Drink with my friends
You can lay on my couch
Aching to start all over again
We going back to your room
But wait a minute it's my room
Throwing up on my bed
Was it something I said?
I said

I hope we stay
Thick as thieves, butter and bread
Pillars of colonial homes
And I wish I could shout you out
False start
Don't get your cane caught in the cracks
Buckle your seatbelts, polluting the airwaves
Single and lonely

And you say you are
Unconsolable
And you say you are
And you say you are

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of X Ambassadors's song Unconsolable discuss themes of loyalty, friendship, and feeling lost or alone. The opening lines express a desire for two people to remain close like "thick as thieves, butter and bread" and "pillars of colonial homes". The singer wishes they could publicly acknowledge their bond with the other person, but something holds them back - a "false start" or fear of disrupting the status quo.

As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the other person is going through a hard time. They describe themselves as "unconsolable" and "uncontrollable", suggesting they are struggling with intense emotions or possibly a mental health issue. Despite this, the singer offers them comfort and support. They invite the other person to drink with their friends and make themselves at home on their couch. However, things take a chaotic turn when they end up back in their room and the other person throws up on their bed.

The repetition of "unconsolable" throughout the song hammers home the other person's distress, while the switches in location (from the colonial home to the singer's room) and tone (from wistful to chaotic) reflect the turmoil of the situation. Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of two individuals trying to hold onto their connection despite the difficulties they face, and the singer's willingness to offer a safe space to the other person in their time of need.

I'll never understand why this was the X Ambassadors single that didn't get famous. Their others are great too, but so far, this is their crown jewel.

@shawnettajones75

This is the one that got them worldwide famous by getting them a record deal after Dan Reynolds eard it on 96X. So it did an awesome job of boosting them.

@ammarisrar2005

This is their crown jewel, hell it made into a video game and I believe that helped with their popularity

This song for those of you who don't know is about his blind brother who is also the pianist in their band. You can see him behind them. Hence "Don't get your cane caught in the cracks" Its a song about his love for his brother, I have a very high respect for these guys. They were amazing last night at the Wild Bull :)
