As a Mexican-American, this movie means so much to me! It really does mess you up! And I think it goes without saying at this point, that the end makes everybody cry. 😂

The anniversary of when my mom passed away is 11.05 (I was 13 when she passed), and then I have my birthday 11.11 (turning 31). So I always get hit with a double whammy of her passing then just knowing I'm celebrating another birthday without her. The realization always hurts knowing I have lived more years without her than with her.

I’m not Mexican but I am proudly Hispanic and many of the themes in this movie connect with me so strongly. Mama Coco reminds me of my grandmother who is nearing the end of her life. She doesn’t remember my kids when she sees them but she’s so happy to see them. She also forgets me in the middle of conversations but there’s still so much love in her eyes. She was a strong woman who went through one tough life and yet remained gentle and kind. So the very end of Coco BROKE me as did that final song. Thanks for reacting to this one!

Same! Mama Coco looks so much like my Gramma Celina, it’s kinda uncanny. She passed away a few years ago just a few months shy of her 100th birthday and she could have been Coco’s twin. Fortunately, her memory never faded with the years and she was as sharp as a tack up until her last day, but I’ve had other relatives who’ve suffered from dementia so the sting of that still remains. I don’t have as many memories of her as I would like as she lived in a very remote part of the country and we didn’t get to visit her ranch all that often, but the ones I do have I cherish. Plenty of good food and open spaces.

Mexico has a really special connection to this movie because Pixar decided to have an early release for Mexico. It also was very emotional because it was weeks after 2017's earthquake, one of the worst in many years. The country was in a state of shock and mounring a lot of victims. So this movie really helped with the healing process.

You're conflating the two events (Hector's death and Hector's departure are two different events). The sequence of events, could very well be: Hector left, X amount of time passed, Imelda learned to make shoes, X amount of time passes, Hector tries to return home, gets poisoned and dies. You cannot say "they were not cobblers until after Hector died" unless you know exactly when they started making shoes, and when Hector died.

I don’t know if you guys realize how powerful it is that you share your vulnerability and sweetness to the world 🥰 being moved at the end shows your humanity and I was crying just as much too!

One thing this movie made me realize was how much our culture (in the U.S.) makes people who have passed “haunted spirits” and the place we go to remember people we’ve lost is seen as a creepy, scary place to avoid. I don’t know if you noticed this detail but there was a big hint at Hèctor being Miguel’s actual great, great grandfather. The golden tooth!
The treasured white guitar has a painted skull with a gold tooth; and Héctor is the only character we see with golden tooth in the film. Some people notice it right away some don’t even think about until they rewatch it.

Coco is a love letter to Mexican culture. The story, the visuals, the music, etc. Also... the theme of the importance of family. How in Hispanic cultures you take care of your elders. Small detail I noticed; when De La Cruz was trying to make Hector stay, he said “I can’t do this without your songs” not ‘without you’ and he didn’t grab his hand or his arm, he only grabbed his suitcase. The only thing he cared about was Hectors work

Great attention to detail! There was also a scene when de la Cruz saved Miguel, he removed the guitar from him and just let it sank. I thought this was odd. This goes to show that he wasn't actually passionate about music but only loved the fame that came with it.

There are so many details like that in this film. One of my favorites is a big clue that Cruz was not Miguel's grandfather was when he was about to give him his blessing before Hector interrupted the petal was not glowing. And also a sign that Hector was the real song writer was him not wanting Miguel to sing Remember Me at the audition, he made up an excuse but he quickly told him no and of course we know why later. And one that I just learned recently is when you see the lyrics to Remember Me the is written as a slower song, you can see the notes, it was always meant to be played slow.

I worked in long-term dementia care for a while. Music is the absolute best way to reach emotions in a dementia patient. It’s almost like magic sometimes. We used to play my abuela her favorite songs when she was wandering. It’s a beautiful thing.

I was so excited to see you guys react to this movie! I'm not Mexican but have always appreciated their culture and was excited when it came it out. I definitely agree you need tissues for this one! The scene that hit me the hardest before the end was when Chicharrón died...I don't know why maybe my own fears of being forgotten but I cried so hard. Honestly Coco was probably the first step in allowing me to understand grief in a different way, grieve my family members I have lost and celebrate them as well. Love all your reactions. 💛

To me this movie speaks to the very real harm that generational trauma can cause. Four generations later this little boy is being affected by the trauma of his great great grandmother, but it also shows that things can be healed and it takes a strong and proactive person to put his foot down and say, “enough!”

Definitely didn’t expect this upload today on Día de Los Muertos, what a treat.

I was lucky to be in Mexico when it premiered a month before it did in the states. I watched it with my dad and it was pure magic, seriously this touched everyones hearts. Not a dry eye. It perfectly encapsulates our culture and importance of family.

The animation of Mama Coco brings me to tears every time, especially at the end of the film. Her hands look EXACTLY like my grandmother’s hands. My grandma died 10 years ago but this movie makes me think of her. Thank you so much for reviewing! This is definitely one of my favorite newer Disney films.

Absolutely the same. My Lola (grandmother) that raised me even looked a lot like Mama Coco, but especially those hands - it took me back to me playing guitar and piano for her while she was alive (she passed about 11 years ago), and holding her hand afterwards. That scene absolutely wrecked me in the theater the first time, and still wrecks me, even just watching this reaction.

I'm Mexican and Disney did a great job with this movie. I've been in the US for about 20 years now, and one thing that makes me a bit sad is how death is not talked about much in here, specially with children. We in Mexico grow up with Dia de Muertos, so we learn the concept of death pretty early on, and that death itself is not scary, it's just the next stag of life. It also allows to deal with feelings of loss and sadness in a healthier way, and it's ok tobe sad, to grieve, to cry, but to also be happy. It's the bittersweet taste of life.

The Oak, you don't have to be Mexican to celebrate Dia de Muertos. You can choose a day that is meaningful to you and your family, and make it a day to share the stories of your loved ones who are no longer here. Whether you believe in the afterlife or not, whether you are religious or not, sharing the memories of your loved ones keep them alive in your heart, and in a way they never truly left us.

I'm mexican by heritage, but my mother grew up whitewashed Mormon and talked bad about any traditions other than her religion. I'm an atheist now, but when I watched this movie, the ending wrecked me. Abuela Coco looks so much like my great grandmother, and the last time I saw her, she remembered med even though I hadn't seen her in years, and she was also losing her memory. I ugly cried the whole rest of the movie, and it made me appreciate the traditions I was so close to yet so far from in my childhood. I hope I can do better with my children and explain the traditions of part of their heritage.

My Gran had dementia, I was her carer for 15 years and music was something that really bonded us. When this came out we sang remember me together, now she has passed away I always think of her when I hear it. This movie is also how my uncle explained death to his young children when he found out he had less than a year to live. So the emotions of this movie run deep for me and my family 😊♥️

I feel you, Oak. I could have used that disclaimer as well. The first time I saw this movie, I was on a plane, and by the end of the movie I was trying to hide in my seat and not show much of a mess I was. For several different reasons, I wasn't able to say good bye to either of my parents or my grandparents when they passed and one of my grandmothers had dementia, so this movie really got to me.

This movie came out about a month after we lost our grandma and she was the glue to our family sticking together and she was what made music live on in our house - I stopped playing piano when she passed away and me and my siblings don’t sing as much as we used to together. when she left we were just so hurt and lost and so when I watched this movie I cried all night, I just miss her so much.

At this point, every Pixar movie comes with the tissue warning for me. They always get me, but Coco might be the one that gets me most. Now more than when it released.
This one is beautiful, heartwarming, has great twists, gets you thinking and just pierces your heart in the best way. Even tho I could guess where they were going the moment he picked up the guitar to play for Coco, how you'll have those beats of her remembering bit by bit, it's executed SO well. The music hitting, with the very subtle animation, Anthony Gonzalez giving a fantastic performance singing while crying and thinking Hector is lost.

So glad you guys were so deeply touched by this movie, tears were streaming down my face when I first saw it. That scene with Miguel singing Hector's song to Coco gets me every time!

It's so clever how the song 'Remember Me' in its two incarnations has two such varied meanings. Ernesto's version is bombastic and upbeat, but oozes the self absorbency and shallowness that he is all about. Hector's original version is slow and meaningful, with so much heart, because it wasn't written to be showy or for an adoring audience. Hector sings remember me for familial reasons full of depth, Ernesto sings remember me to a world of strangers, begging them for eternal adoration but without any true love or depth.

Also, I love that music never truly is a negative thing in the movie, like Miguel's family initially believe. It has the power to heal old wounds, like when Mama Imelda finally sings again and suddenly falls back in love with Hector, it helps Coco return briefly from dementia to remember her father, it even sends that poor guy in the hammock off peacefully to true death. It's not even a negative thing with Ernesto De La Cruz, because none of his hits are his, it's his greed and desperation for fame that turns him bad, not the music itself.

As a mexican american who isn't religious but still makes an altar with my family...it is such a beautiful tradition. I'm not religious but every dia de los muertos I feel close to my family and my culture and it's a tradition that I will pass down.

Y’all’s reaction should’ve also come with a cry warning. The end of this movie gets me ugly crying every time. As someone with a grandma who was suffering from dementia before she passed, I got to see how powerfully music can effect the mind. We’d visit my grandma every week where she was being taken care of, and one time my dad brought a keyboard (grandma used to teach piano) and she could still play almost perfectly. We sang too, and she remembered all the words even though she couldn’t remember all of us who were in the room with her. I thought this movie highlighted that well. Beautiful stuff, loved the reaction ❤

Out of the songs in this movie, my favorite is "Un Poco Loco", which translates to "A little crazy". I love how they animated this movie and wrote the songs, on top of honoring Mexican culture and customs. (Despite me DESPISING Ernesto De La Cruz, even before learning of his villainous nature). It's IMPOSSIBLE to avoid crying while Miguel is singing with Mamá Coco. Being Mexican-American, what makes this movie so special to me is the concept of family. On my family's ofrenda, one of the pictures we put up is of my paternal grandfather Marcelino. He died when I was in 8th grade (2005) and even now in 2023, going into 2024, it messes me up with emotion. Every day, I wish I could see him face-to-face one last time, give him a big hug and tell him how much I love and miss him. 😢😢😢😢

My dog is the same breed as Dante. They don't have their side molars, that's why their tongue hangs out like that, especially as they get older. Everyone who sees her has no clue what she could be, so I was so happy when this movie came out, so now I just tell people she's the same breed as Dante in Coco.

It's so moving to see you guys so touched by this movie. It completely caught me off guard when I saw it, hitting home on multiple levels. My dad was a career musician and at the time this came out he was in his 80s, suffering from dementia. The apparent conflict between a musician/artist following their dream, and their love of their family - the way that music can heal and bring back memories, the idea of a family legacy like portrayed here... it all just had me breaking apart, bawling in my husband's arms :P <3 And I love how vulnerable you guys allowed yourselves to be, how you let your emotions show, it means so much <3

I'm right there with you, Oak - I've seen this movie half a dozen times and I'm still a sobbing mess the last 10 minutes of the movie. Especially the scene with Coco. I love that it was music that reached Coco's memory... that's a real thing. People with Alzheimer's and Dementia - they remember music even when they can remember nothing else. Which is why music therapy is an important part in memory care now. After so many studies and just recorded evidence of patients with extreme Alzheimer's/Dementia responding to music even after they stop responding to family members and photographs. It's amazing. How universal music is an how deeply in our minds it touches.

I have only ever seen my husband cry twice, once was when watching this movie. It depicts the Mexican culture perfectly. I once watched this on an international flight and tried hard to hide my tears. When we landed, I went to the restroom and realized that I had mascara running down my face. 😂

As an animation nerd, I was so excited to see this movie when it came out because I’d heard so much about the animators being able to perfectly match Miguel’s finger movements to the actual strings being played in that first guitar scene. This was back when Disney was really pushing itself with realism (Elsa’s hair, the landscapes in The Good Dinosaur, hair and water in Moana).
Not only is the animation amazing, but the story is beautiful and makes me cry every time. One of my favorite Pixar movies❤

Recordamos a nuestros seres queridos todo el tiempo, pero en día de muertos, la creencia prehispánica dice que ellos vienen a visitarnos, por eso les ofrecemos en el altar los alimentos que en vida fueron sus favoritos. Las familias se reunen y es triste, pero al mismo tiempo es alegre recordar todos los momentos de felicidad que vivimos juntos. También día de muertos nos ayuda a querer y respetar a nuestra familia, porque un día nos iremos todos de este mundo. Debemos ser felices en vida, y recordar con amor a los que ya no están aquí. Now I NEED to watch “Onward” with y’all!!! 😭 it’s a story about brothers growing closer while on a once in a lifetime adventure and, whew, it makes me emotional. It came at a time when I had just had my first baby and my dad was diagnosed with his first of 3 types of cancers. It’s a movie that I will truly cherish for my life as it helped me get thru the tough stuff and helped me notice more of (and appreciate) the good stuff. 100/10 movie and I recommend strongly. I agree with Oak, this film needs a tissue box warning! I really feel for him, the emotions that this film took him through, and am so sorry to hear about how his father died. November is my dad's birth month too, and he's been gone over 13 years now, but this film still brings those feelings up for me in a big way, especially the scene with Miguel and Coco. It really does make you think about the responsibility of the living to carry on the memories of those who have passed. If they were someone you loved, someone you miss, share their stories so they can continue to live on long after their gone. I think we're often told to move on and forget when we're dealing with grief and loss, but doing that actually takes you further and further away from them, by letting them fade away. The way they depict that in the film really gets to me, it's like a second, final, death of the spirit, when nothing of you remains in the world of the living anymore. Just a profound, beautiful film with so many layers.
