Napoli
Lyrics

Kauniit ihmiset ilmastoidusta linja-autosta tuijottaa
On ikkunat kiinni, ettei slummien lцyhkд
Pддse herkkiд aisteja pilaamaan
On kamerat suunnattu sortuviin taloihin,
Onneksi auringonvaloa riittдд
Ja matkaoppaan veistetty hymy
Taas kauniisti turistien rahoista kiittдд
Miljoonat ihmiset haukkovat harmaata
Ilmaa hetkeksi varastoon
Kuin lasteittain kaloja kuivalla maalla,
Jotka joutuvat viikoksi aurinkoon
Nyt on Napolikin saanut oman jumalansa,
Maradona on muuttanut kaupunkiin
Mutta viekц hдn ihmiset pois paratiisiin
Vai jдttддkц lojumaan helvettiin

Napoli huutaa lastensa perддn,
Ei Jumala katso tдhдn kaupunkiin
Napoli itkee ja pдivдnд erддnд
Hukkuu kai miljooniin kyyneliin
On Napoli huutanut ддnensд loppuun,
Se palata koskaan ei voi eiliseen
Nдkyy ihmisten silmistд, etteivдt maasta
Voi nдhdд he taivaaseen

Polvenkorkuiset katujenkasvatit katoavat ihmisviidakkoon
Ja kiilto silmissд katse kulkee turistin lihavaan lompakkoon
Ei nдhdд voi heistд romantiikkaa
Katupoikien laulut pois laulettu on
Nдin pдivд on kulkenut aamusta iltaan,
Nдin kuolla voi kaupunki kuolematon

Napoli huutaa lastensa perддn...

Nдin pдivд on kulkenut aamusta iltaan,
Nдin kuolla voi kaupunki kuolematon
Nдin pдivд on kulkenut aamusta iltaan
Ja illan jдlkeen on yц loputon

Napoli huutaa lastensa perддn...

Napoli huutaa lastensa perддn...

Overall Meaning

Yö's song "Napoli" is a beautiful and emotional tribute to the city of Naples in Italy. The song starts with the beautiful people staring out of their air-conditioned bus, while avoiding the smell of the slums. The cameras are aimed at the crumbling houses, but there is enough sunshine and the perfect tour guide smiles to thank tourists for their money. Millions of people gasp for air in the grey sky, as if children stranded on dry land, exposed to sun for a week. Naples has now got its own god, Maradona, who has moved to the city, but will he take the people away to paradise, or leave them to languish in hell?

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Napoli huutaa lastensa perддn," which means "Naples is calling out to its children." In the song, Naples is portrayed as a city in pain and tears, crying out to its children to come back to it. The city is shown to be losing its children to the hustle and bustle of tourists, as they search for romance that is hard to find in the world of street children. The day passes from morning to evening, and the city seems to die at night, but it is still immortal.

Line by Line Meaning

Kauniit ihmiset ilmastoidusta linja-autosta tuijottaa
Beautiful people stare from the air-conditioned coach, with the windows closed so as not to spoil their sensitive senses with the stench from the slums. Cameras are pointed at collapsing houses, but luckily, there is enough sunlight and the carved smile of the tour guide again beautifully thanks the tourists for their money.

Miljoonat ihmiset haukkovat harmaata
Millions of people gasp for dark, shady air and store it for a moment, like fish out of water for a week. No view of romance from them.

Nyt on Napolikin saanut oman jumalansa
Now even Naples has its own God, Maradona, who has moved to the city. But does he take the people to paradise or leave them in hell?

Napoli huutaa lastensa perддn,
Naples cries for its children, but God does not look into this city. Naples weeps and one day drowns in millions of tears. Naples has shouted its voice out, and it can never go back to yesterday. It is evident from the people's eyes that they can never see heaven from the ground.

Polvenkorkuiset katujenkasvatit katoavat ihmisviidakkoon
Street kids who grow up to be knee-high disappear into the human jungle, and the sparkle in their eyes looks at a fat tourist wallet. The songs of the street boys are no longer sung.

Nдin pдivд on kulkenut aamusta iltaan,
So the day has passed from morning to night, and a city that cannot die can die this way.

Napoli huutaa lastensa perддn...
Naples cries for its children.
