Miles Away
Yo La Tengo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ease your mind
Bide your time
Hold those thoughts for now

Burdens rise
Avert your eyes
The pain creeps in anyhow
Na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na

You feel alone
Friends are all gone
Keep wiping the dust from your eyes

So many signs
I must be blind
How few of them I see

Na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na

Na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
Na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, "Ease your mind, bide your time, hold those thoughts for now," the singer is encouraging the listener to find peace and patience in a difficult situation. By asking them to hold their thoughts, the lyrics suggest a need to temporarily set aside worries or concerns. The repetition of "Na-na-na" evokes a sense of comfort or reassurance, acting as a soothing refrain throughout the song.

As the lyrics progress, the theme shifts to the idea of burdens rising and the struggle to avoid facing pain. The phrase "avert your eyes, the pain creeps in anyhow" conveys a sense of inevitability - even if one tries to ignore or avoid difficulties, they will still find a way to surface. This could speak to the human tendency to turn away from unpleasant truths or emotions, only to have them resurface later on.

The following lines delve into feelings of isolation and loss, with the mention of feeling alone and friends being gone. The act of wiping the dust from one's eyes can symbolize a desire to see things clearly or to gain a new perspective. This could represent a longing for connection or support, as well as a need to confront and address the challenges that come with loneliness and absence.

The final verse touches on themes of missed opportunities and personal blindness, with the singer acknowledging their own failings in recognizing important signs or cues. The juxtaposition of "So many signs, I must be blind" reveals a sense of regret or self-awareness about not fully grasping the significance of certain moments or revelations. The repetition of the uplifting "Na-na-na" melody amidst these introspective lyrics could offer a sense of hope or respite, suggesting that despite personal shortcomings or struggles, there is still a source of comfort or solace to be found.

I haven’t heard the rest of the album yet, I like this song a lot but I feel like it drags a bit and is slightly derivative. I like it don’t get me wrong and hopefully it will grow on me but I don’t exactly love it right at the moment.

@curly_wyn

@@joshfowler5581 I don’t think it’s derivative at all. At most you could say that the rocking tracks like Fallout are extremely derivative, but this track has an industrial dance-type beat to it that’s something completely different for YLT!
