Kurushi

Overall Meaning

The song "Kurushi" by Yoko Ono/IMA is a haunting and repetitive piece that explores the theme of psychic pain and mental anguish. The Japanese word "kurushi" translates as "suffering" or "anguish," and the song's lyrics repeat this word over and over again, punctuated by the occasional "aah" or "ooh."

At the beginning of the song, the singer's voice is soft and almost childlike as they repeat the word "kurushi." However, as the song progresses, their voice becomes more anguished and intense, reflecting the deepening pain they are experiencing. The use of repetition and minimalism in the song's structure reinforces the sense of ongoing suffering, without any clear resolution or escape from the pain.

Overall, "Kurushi" is a powerful and emotional song that conveys the experience of mental suffering in a visceral and immediate way. It is a haunting and memorable piece that captures the listener's attention and holds it throughout.

A friend gave me the 40 anniversary of Double Fantasy for Christmas a couple of years ago. I noticed I was gravitating to Yoko’s songs (heard Johns a million times). Yoko is a true artist, very talented and way ahead of her time, this song is so touching it’s almost too difficult to listen too. A lot people think she is just screaming, no listening carefully her pitch and tone is excellent. And Sean wow!!! what a musician John would be proud of them both.

Kenji Katsuno

A great rendition of reflection of the suffering caused by the nuclear holacaust in Hiroshima and Nagaski thanks to man's inhumanity to his fellow brethren on planet earth.
