Sky People
Yoko Ono Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stopped flying a long time ago,
Thinking that's just for the birds and bees.
But when I look up (I look up)
And see the sky, (see the sky)
I like the blue and I know why.

You came from Zeus, we come from Uranus,
Hoping to meet soul to soul.
We see you clearly, (clearly)
With our third eye, (with our third eye)
There's no more fear and I know why.

Sky people, that's what we are,
Sky people, that's what we are.
One day we'll fly and leap through the sky
To look for a good land hand in hand.

Sky people, that's what we are,
Sky people, that's what we are,

Sky people, that's what we are,
Sky people, that's what we are.

Overall Meaning

The song "Sky People" by Yoko Ono is a contemplation about the nature of humanity and our connection to the universe. The singer reflects on their past reluctance to fly, seeing it as something reserved for "the birds and bees." However, upon looking up at the sky and appreciating its blue expanse, the singer realizes the beauty of flying and the significance of small things in life that can lead to profound revelations. The song then shifts to the idea that humans and gods both have a place in the universe. Humans come from Uranus, while the gods - represented here by Zeus - have their own origins. Despite their different backgrounds, it's suggested that there is a meeting point between the two, and that we all share a common purpose.

As the song progresses, the focus turns more towards spiritual matters. The singer talks of seeing things "clearly" with their "third eye," which is a reference to the idea of the third eye chakra in Hinduism and Buddhism. This chakra is associated with perception beyond the physical realm, and the ability to connect with a higher consciousness. With this connection comes a sense of liberation from fear, as the singer says "there's no more fear and I know why." Finally, the singer refers to themselves and others as "sky people" - suggesting that we are all connected to the sky and the universe in a meaningful way, and that one day we will be able to "fly and leap through the sky" together, bound for a better world.

Overall, "Sky People" is a song that invites listeners to think deeply about their place in the universe and the human experience. It touches on themes of spirituality, interconnectedness, and the beauty of everyday experiences.

I like her music. Especially this album. Definitely influenced by the B-52’s.

I read somewhere that initially Yoko inspired the Bs but once John Lennon heard Rock Lobster it inspired him to perform more songs with Yoko.

MATTHEW CARROLL

The B52s were influenced by her .... not vice versa. They claimed their love of her music as far back as the 70s. They have also covered one of her songs. Rock Lobster is ALL Yoko at the end of the song.
