Young Galaxy formed in Vancouver, Canada, as duo including Stephen Ramsay and Catherine McCandless. Through that summer of 2005 and the spring of 2006 they recorded with appearances and contributions of friends at Jace Lasek’s Breakglass Studio. Their sound has been described as similar to the bands Slowdive, Galaxie 500 and Luna as well as Pink Floyd and Spiritualized. The band has toured in Canada, The United States and Europe, opening for Arcade Fire, The Album Leaf, The Frames, Peter, Bjorn and John, Stars and Death Cab For Cutie. They later moved to Montreal, where they recorded their self-titled debut. The album was released on April 24, 2007.
They recorded their second album Invisible Republic in Montreal at Hotel2Tango studio with Radwan Moumneh engineering (A Silver Mt. Zion, Pas Chic Chic) and at Breakglass Studios with Jace Lasek of The Besnard Lakes engineering. Invisible Republic was released independently on August 25, 2009 through Fontana North. It was mixed by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol) in Glasgow, Scotland. It was subsequently released in July 2010 in the U.S.A. by Paper Bag Records, and received a long list nomination for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize.
The band followed up in fall 2010 with YG No Art EP, an EP comprising unreleased tracks and remixes from the Invisible Republic sessions.
Their third album, Shapeshifting, was recorded in Montreal, Canada, and was produced by Dan Lissvik of the band Studio in Gothenburg, Sweden. The band communicated with Lissvik via Skype over the nine months he spent mixing the recorded vocals.
The album, released in February 2011 on Paper Bag Records, has been described as a massive change in creative direction, eschewing their former shoegaze, dream-pop style for a more electronic pop sound. Stephen Ramsay describes the change in song composition method, "instead of picking up a guitar and finding the most brilliant melody we could, we tried to erase the shape of the songs."

It's just the late nights always got the best of you
Sometimes I would hide and cry all night, unsteady
Waiting for some contact, call back
To know you're ready, ready to shine
Ready to shine
Ready to shine
Ready to shine
Can't you see you break the clouds for me
Just like the mornings, quiet sensuality
Some days are sublime, our lines pulled tight and steady
Whenever you find me and hold me, you show me
I'm ready, ready to shine
Ready to shine, ready to shine
Ready to shine, ready to shine
Ready to shine, ready to shine
Ready to shine, ready to shine
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Sometimes I would hide and cry all night, unsteady
Waiting for some contact, call back
To know you're ready, ready to shine
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Shaking my bell, you can ring me up
Breaking my shell, you can bring me up
Sometimes I would hide and cry all night, unsteady
Waiting for some contact, call back
To know you're ready, ready to shine
Ready to shine

"Ready to Shine" by Young Galaxy speaks of a complicated relationship where the singer wants their partner to embrace their true potential and find inner strength. The lyrics suggest that the singer is not trying to change their partner's perspective, but rather highlighting how the late nights and struggles have taken a toll on them. The singer shares their vulnerability, confessing to moments of hiding and crying, all the while longing for a connection and reassurance that their partner is ready to shine.
The repetition of the phrase "Ready to shine" reinforces the desire for their partner to break free from the clouds that overshadow their potential. The singer sees their partner as someone who brings light into their life and compares this to the quiet sensuality of a beautiful morning. The energy and positivity their partner brings is described as sublime, and in those moments, both of them feel balanced and secure. The mention of their lines being pulled tight and steady suggests a sense of stability and alignment when they are together.
The powerful imagery of shaking a bell and breaking a shell signifies the singer's desire to be awakened and liberated by their partner's love. It symbolizes their yearning to be lifted from their own emotional barriers and embrace their true selves. Additionally, the repetition of these lines emphasizes the importance of their partner's presence in their life. By ringing the bell and breaking their shell, their partner has the ability to bring the singer up, to uplift them and help them grow.
Overall, the lyrics convey a deep longing for their partner to find the strength and readiness to overcome their obstacles and shine. The singer's vulnerability and willingness to wait and hide their emotions demonstrate their dedication to the relationship. They are seeking assurance that their partner will embrace their true potential and be ready to shine alongside them, ultimately creating a strong and radiant connection.
