Human Nature
Youngblood Brass Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looking out across the night-time
The city winks a sleepless eye
Hear her voice shake my window
Sweet seducing sighs Get me out into the night-time
Four walls won't hold me tonight
If this town is just an apple
Then let me take a bite If they say,
why, why? Tell 'em that is human nature
Why, why does he do me that way?
If they say, why, why? Tell 'em that is human nature
Why, why does he do me that way? Reaching out to touch a stranger
Electric eyes are everywhere
See that girl, she knows I'm watching
She likes the way I stare If they say,
why, why? Tell 'em that is human nature
Why, why does he do me that way?
If they say, why, why? Tell 'em that is human nature
Why, why does he do me that way?
I like livin' this way,
I like lovin' this way Looking out across the morning
The city's heart begins to beat
Reaching out, I touch her shoulder
I'm dreaming of the street If they say,
why, why? Tell 'em that is human nature
Why, why does he do me that way?
If they say, why, why? Ooh, tell 'em
Why, why does he do me that way? If they say, why, why? Cha cha cha
Why, why does he do me that way?
If they say why, why, why? Ooh, tell 'em
Why, why does he do me that way? If they say, why, why? Ooh, tell 'em
Why, why does he do me that way?
If they say, why, why? Da da da

Why, why does he do me that way?
I like livin' this way

Overall Meaning

The Youngblood Brass Band's song "Human Nature" begins with the singer looking out across the city at night. The city is awake and bustling, yet the singer is restless and wants to escape. He hears a seductive voice coming from outside that beckons him away from his solitary confines. The singer wants to be out in the world, living freely and experiencing all that life has to offer. The song then describes the singer's encounters with strangers on the street, including a girl who catches his eye. The singer is caught up in his own desires and enjoys living and loving on his own terms.

The chorus of the song repeats the question of "why, why does he do me that way?" The singer is being judged by society for his actions, yet he believes that it is just human nature to act on his desires. He does not want to be confined by societal norms or expectations, he wants to be free to live and love as he pleases. In the end, the song concludes with the singer dreaming about being back on the street, living his life unapologetically.
